10 Tips to learn a new language

Learning a new language is an exciting experience. It’s also very rewarding. You will be able to communicate with people who don’t speak your native tongue, and you may find that it improves your memory, reasoning skills, and even intuition! But what are the best ways to learn a new language? Here are 10 suggestions for how to get started- or take your current knowledge of another language up a notch- in no time at all.

  1. Start by understanding the verbs conjugation

If you're learning a new language, start by learning the different verb conjugations. By doing this, you will be able to recognize words better and make more sense out of the sentence. Conjugating verbs is a skill that can be learned and perfected.

2. Memorize the vocabularies in a context or a specific theme

It is easier to learn new words when you can use them in a specific situation. Memorize the vocabularies that are related with the topic or theme that interests you, for example vocabulary used in cooking or traveling. This way, you will be able to apply your newly learned words immediately and this will give more value to them.

3. Make sure to learn the alphabet as well as pronunciation.

Learning the letters will help you recognize and understand what others are saying, which is important when it comes to listening comprehension. This becomes particularly difficult for languages with close sounds for different letters like French and Spanish (e.g., "p" ~ "b").

4. Use picture-based learning to acquire new vocabulary.

There are loads of free apps available for every smartphone, tablet, and computer that will allow you to quickly add words to your vocabulary list just by pointing your camera at them! If you don’t have a device on which to download these types of apps, you can use more traditional word or phrase books that use pictures instead of words to explain meaning.

5. Practice writing, speaking , and listening in your new language.

Many people in the U.S. speak both English and Spanish, even though it isn’t uncommon to meet someone who has never written anything except their name in Spanish! This is because when you learn a language as a child, you learn how to speak it before anything else. While this is true of most adults who have learned a second language, writing can be extremely challenging for those who haven’t practiced. In order to become fluent in your new language- or even just to make yourself understood by native speakers- make sure you know how to write in it, too.

6. Find social groups online.

Many people find that learning a new language is easier when they learn with friends. If you enjoy conversing with native speakers online, there are plenty of forums devoted to language-learning where you can practice either speaking or writing! You can also try searching for language-specific social media sites.

7. Slow down! Don’t let yourself get frustrated if you don’t understand everything right away.

Just because someone is speaking quickly doesn’t mean they are unintelligible. It is best to try and listen more than you speak when learning a language, as most adults learn how to speak before they learn how to write fluently .

8. Find a tutor , whether online or in person.

If you are learning on your own, there may be times when you just don’t understand what someone is saying to you , even if they think it should be simple. It doesn’t hurt to find someone who can review the language with you and explain things as many times as needed.

9. Keep a journal .

It’s not easy to remember everything you learn when you are trying to practice it every day after work or school. If you write down what you know in a notebook, though, it won’t take long for your journal to become full of useful vocabulary you can review later.

10. Practice speaking with yourself.

This might sound strange, but if you are learning on your own, it’s always good to get in some speaking practice even when there isn’t another person around! Pretend that someone is asking you a question in the language you are learning and answer it. This will help strengthen your speaking abilities, as well as making you feel more comfortable with your new language .

Good luck! These ten tips will help you on your way to learning a new language, and hopefully you’ll be able to use one of them without any trouble. If not, don’t worry! Learning a language is not easy, despite what some might say.
