10 Tips On How To Become A Person Of Value

Hello Dear Believer,

Thank you for subscribing to this newsletter.

According to Seth Godin in his book, Linchpin: Are You Indispensable? You are a genius if you have solved a problem before, no matter how little.

He also added that it is possible for you to become indispensable if you can work hard to develop and arm yourself with the required skills needed to make a difference in any field of endeavour (paraphrased).

When organisations are faced with the hard decision of laying off workers, they make sure that those who are valuable to the organisation remain.

1. To be a person of value, you must understand the terrain (workplace/industry/business) you operate in/from.

Take out time to study and acquaint yourself with the structure, hierarchy, values, culture, and maybe possible bottlenecks so as to come up with an effective and non-intrusive strategy.

Jesus' advice to his disciples in Matthew 10:16 (MSG) comes to mind here. He said: Stay alert. This is hazardous work I’m assigning you. You’re going to be like sheep running through a wolf pack, so don’t call attention to yourselves. Be as shrewd as a snake, inoffensive as a dove.

2. As you study your terrain, take note of areas where you think your expertise or skills can help make a difference and add value. If it is allowed, ask questions to be sure.

3. Make up your mind to serve and be of service in any way possible even if there is nothing to gain. The corridor of service is always right before the hall of relevance in the king's palace.

Volunteer to be on problem-solving teams, learn about the tasks other colleagues are handling, or take up responsibilities nobody wants.

Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many - Matthew 10:16.

4. Any selfish motive should be thrown out of the door because people will notice your lack of genuineness and your credibility will be in doubt.

5. A person of value is driven by compassion. A genuine desire to be of help and add value to people's lives or a process.

When you search through the scriptures, you will discover that Jesus was moved by compassion to help people and improve situations.

For instance, in Matthew 20:34, the bible says: So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

6. Be the solution. There is a difference between proferring a solution and being the solution.

Being the solution entails adding a touch of humanity by connecting with people at an intimate level that causes them to think of you when there is a need around your area of expertise.

Your attitude, communication, and confidence are all part of the mix. The idea is to leave a sweet fragrance behind.

Peter testified that Jesus had this touch in John 6:68. It says: Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

7. When you discover any need or area you think should/can be improved, you need to gauge your competence and capacity.

Do not be shy to ask for help or look for ways of improving your skill if you discover that you lack the competence and capacity to solve the problem.

When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?

And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do - John 6:5-6.

It is also important that you find out if the organisation is willing to take on the new idea, input or process. Most times the focus of the organisation can be different.

8. Be on the lookout and stay hungry. Think ahead and come up with new and better ways of meeting the needs and solving the problems around you, and those that might show up in the future.

Innovation is the ability to come up with new concepts, processes or systems to deal with existing and new problems.

If they aren't being implemented, get a journal and write them down. The same problem might show up somewhere else, where your solution will be in high demand and appreciated (not saying you should quit).

9. Do not take on the tasks alone. Assemble a team of like-minded individuals (not rebels), and also try to get the buy-in of a decision-maker.

Jesus knew he would not be able to accomplish God's vision for him alone so he assembled a team.

Mark 1:17 says: Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men"

For decision-makers and those in top management, it will help if you make it look like it is their idea.

10. Develop mental toughness and learn how to handle rejection because your idea might be knocked down. Be patient, and do not let fear stop you.

Every problem is a growth opportunity so grab the bull by the horn when it shows up.

I pray that the miracle, breakthrough and upliftment you have been expecting since January will be released to you before this year ends in the name of Jesus. Amen!
