Business growth is an issue that we all have as business owners. There is so much information out there, and some of it works. I took a year off from social media in 2019 to build out another portion of my business...
During this time, I let all of my social media accounts die so that I could focus on keeping my clients happy and building out this new addition to my business model.
These are some of the hard lessons that I’ve learned so far while reviving my social media accounts. I haven’t used any ads, paid shoutouts, or any other hacks.
I’ve been posting unique content based on my research and am testing new content based on the audience’s behavior. These are some of the techniques that have worked in my business so far.
1. Pick your goals. How do you want your social media profiles to help you grow your business? Are you building brand awareness? Authority in your industry? Write these goals down.
2. Figure out who your audience is. Go deeper than the traditional metrics of male, female, age, etc. What keeps them going? What are the real issues they are facing daily to keep the doors open?
3. Where does your audience hang out? Wherever they hang out is where you need to have an active profile. If you have one that you haven’t used in a while, that’s ok. You can pick up where you left off.
4. Visit their profile and write down what type of content that is engaging. Research is a crucial step in helping you create content that will engage your audience.
5. Find a connection between your brand and the type of content your audience is posting and likes. As you are doing research, you’ll notice a pattern in the type of content that interests your audience. Leverage this knowledge to your advantage.
6. Reach out to your audience and talk about it. One of my favorite straight-forward methods to engage is to ask. Polls have worked the best in my business.
7. Don’t' lie or force it. An honest and natural connection is key to building meaningful relationships with your audience to position your business for long-term growth.
8. Be consistent. Post on your social media enough for your audience to expect to see you. Frequency is important and you should post multiple times a day on the platforms where your target audience hangs out.
9. Relevant content. Share content your audience will enjoy. Content consumption is tricky to track if you don’t understand the metrics. When I started tracking my results on social media, I focused on likes and impressions only. These metrics are ok, but you want to look at the big picture on each platform.
10. Talk to your audience. When you’re building an audience and you aren’t a celebrity, then it’s a good idea to run a bit of a “grassroots” campaign. Sending out welcome messages to your new followers or commenting on their posts is a great way to get that done easily. Remember, it's called social media for a reason.
