10 Tips for Excellent Business Networking by London Business Network

Remember, successful networking is an ongoing process. By consistently applying these tips, you can build a robust professional network that contributes to your success. As the old saying goes, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. So my first word of advice is preparation.

1) Preparation?

a. Update your professional networking platforms like LinkedIn to showcase your expertise and reflect your personal brand.?

b. Take a professional headshot. There's no second chance to give a good first impression, so look professional.

c. Craft your content with your target audience in mind and proofread before publishing. Connect with industry professionals, and join relevant online groups. A polished online profile enhances your credibility.?

d. Personal hygiene and self-care. Need I say more? Well, you'd be surprised. Again, there's no second chance to give a good first impression. Dress for the occasion, after all, you're looking for new opportunities. Groom yourself well, have some breath mints in your pocket, and don't overdo the perfume.

2) Be Digital?

Who wants to type in contact information anymore? Create a QR code vCard to share your contact information or print your QR code on your business cards. I also suggest creating QR codes that lead people directly to your website, social media profiles and Whatsapp.?

3) Set Clear Objectives for Networking

Clearly define your networking goals. Whether it's meeting like-minded professionals, expanding your client base, or staying up to date with industry trends, having specific objectives will guide your networking efforts. Why not start by setting a simple goal of making 5 new connections per event you attend??

4) Listen Actively and Communicate Effectively

Successful networking involves not only talking about yourself, but also actively listening to others. Understand their needs and challenges, and demonstrate how your skills can provide solutions.

Effective communication is important. Be articulate, concise, and engaging when introducing yourself and discussing your services.

Write, memorise and rehearse your 30-second elevator pitch. You need to tell people what you do in an engaging way that will make them remember you. Practice makes perfect, so rehearse at home in front of your mirror before setting off to your next networking event.?

5) Follow Up and Use a CRM

After making initial connections, follow up promptly. Express gratitude for the interaction and suggest a follow-up meeting. Write a standard message that contains your meeting booking link to make it easier for your new connections to get in touch with you. Consistent communication strengthens relationships so make sure you log your interactions in a CRM like Hubspot.?

6) Offer Help or a Free Consultation

Networking is a two-way street. Be willing to offer assistance or share your expertise without expecting an immediate return. This establishes goodwill and fosters long-term connections.

7) Proactively Attend Industry Events

Proactively participate in conferences, seminars, and industry gatherings. These events provide valuable opportunities to meet like-minded professionals, potential clients, and collaborators.
