May is Mental Health Awareness Month. This is a great month to discuss mental health both at home and in the workplace. We have been observing since 1949 and we should keep spreading awareness.
I want to observe this month by offering a few tips to boost your mental health.
- Gratitude - take a few minutes each day to be grateful. Ask yourself what are 2-3 things you are grateful for that happened today?
- Pay it forward - doing random acts of kindness give both the person doing the act and the person receiving it a boost of happiness.
- Get a daily dose of positive emotions - negative emotions are stronger than positive emotions. We need 3 positive emotions to balance out one negative emotion. Add love, gratitude, kindness, awe/wonderment, hope, inspiration, happiness/joy, etc. to your day.
- Make sure your basic needs are met. This includes sleep, diet, water and exercise. For better mental health - be mindful of your sugar and caffeine intake. Alcohol is a depressant. Processed food causes inflammation which can lead to depression.
- Do you have good morning and evening routines? We feel more balanced and less stressed when we have a routine.
- Add some mindfulness into your day and help reduce your stress, lower blood pressure and reduce chronic pain. Mindfulness could be taking a walk, writing in a journal, deep breathing, grounding, stretching, prayer, etc.
- Digital Detox - take some time each day to reduce your tech. Make dinner time tech free and remove your technology 60 minutes before bed.
- Do something fun - what cultivates happiness for you?
- Stay away from toxic people - people can be one of our biggest stressors. Remove the toxic people and if you can't, set strict boundaries and time limitations.
- Pick one area of your life you want to improve on. Write out a goal and 1 or 2 action steps you can take to move forward. Take one of those action steps today. It can be a tiny step, no judgment.
