10 Things You Need to Do to Own This Year

10 Things You Need to Do to Own This Year

1. Start with Reflection

Find a time and place you can think without distractions and look back on this last year. What worked? What didn’t? If it didn’t go as well as you’d hoped, don’t be afraid to be real about that. Improvement starts with an honest look at where you are right now.

2. Set Real Goals, Not Wishful Thinking

Goals need to be specific and actionable … not “I want to save $500,” but “I’ll save $1000 a month and use the money I put aside to buy a new truck by the end of 2026.” What other goals are you thinking about? Do you have debt to pay off? What are your goals for your health and fitness or your relationships?

3. Money’s the Foundation, but Not the Whole House

Getting your finances in order is key, but it’s not the whole picture. Think of it as the foundation for everything else. When you’ve got your money working for you, you can focus on things that really matter—traveling, helping family, or even just enjoying life. It’s about building a life you’re proud of, not just stacking up cash for no reason.

4. Budgeting Ain’t Sexy, But It Works

Let’s be real: budgets aren’t fun to think about, but they work. A budget is your game plan, the map to where you want to go. Without one, you’re just guessing. Start simple—figure out what’s coming in, what’s going out, and where you can tighten things up. It’s the first step to hitting any goal.

5. Invest in Yourself

One of the smartest moves you can make is putting time and money into your own growth. Take that course, hit the gym, or spend more time with the people who matter to you. The payoff might not be instant, but over time, those investments will improve your life in ways you didn’t even see coming.

6. Emergency Funds = Peace of Mind

Stuff happens. Cars break down, pipes burst, or you just need a little breathing room. An emergency fund gives you that peace of mind so you’re not scrambling when life throws a curveball. Even just a little saved each month adds up and makes a huge difference.

7. Don’t Forget About Fun

Life’s not just about grindin’. You’ve gotta enjoy the ride, too. Plan for something fun—whether it’s a weekend getaway, a new gadget, or just a night out. A little fun keeps you motivated and makes the hard work worth it.

8. Accountability Changes the Game

Having someone to check in with—whether it’s a friend, a mentor, or an advisor—can make all the difference. They’ll keep you on track, push you when you slack, and celebrate your wins with you. Don’t go it alone; the support makes it easier to stay focused.

9. Think Long-Term, Act Short-Term

Big dreams can feel overwhelming, but breaking them into smaller steps makes them manageable. Focus on what you can do today, this week, or this month to get closer to your long-term goals. Those small wins stack up faster than you think.

10. Write It Down

A plan in your head is just an idea. Writing it down makes it real. Use a notebook, a spreadsheet, or an app—whatever works for you—and track your goals and action steps. Seeing it on paper (or a screen) gives you something to hold yourself accountable to.
