10 Things that really annoy me in hotels

I was looking back over 2015 and wondering to myself what kind of “end of year” article I might write.

As I surveyed the landscape I saw a plethora of articles about “consolidation”, “rationalisation”, “disruption”, “the death of and rebirth of the Billboard Effect”, “revenue management is the new black” and more of the usual suspects;

After over 6 years of heavy international business travel as well as extensive extended stays as a leisure traveller having stayed in hundreds of hotels; I thought why not list…. The top ten things that annoy me about them:--

In no particular order: -

  • Two piece clothes hangers – enough said!
  • Toiletries and soaps that are so astringent you wouldn’t wash your pets with them, let alone human beings!
  • No Ironing board or iron or even the dreaded laundry room. Reception suggests you can get your shirt “laundered” which doesn’t help when you need a shirt ironed then and there.
  • Fried Eggs with cold yolk and runny egg white – How hard is it to fry an egg?  While we're at it, the "crispy" bacon and revolting sugary fruit juice  ain't great either,
  • Thin curtains which don’t meet in the middle – after that long haul flight and midnight night check in there’s nothing quite like waking up at the crack of dawn!
  • Ridiculous breakfast times – not everyone is up and ready for a breakfast that finishes at 8.30am
  • Taps (especially in showers) that are red for cold and blue for hot – add high water pressure and things get can get real nasty quickly
  • Checking in and then waiting 2 hours to go to your room.
  • Your friendly “wrecking crew room cleaning team" shouting, talking loudly and generally smashing their trollies around in the hall way at 6.30am
  • Wi-Fi – that is either ridiculously slow or worst of all is charged to the room! This is the 20th Century really!

 I sure others will come to me but for now these are the standouts.

As 2015 comes to a close, I take this opportunity in wishing you safe and Happy Holidays – looking forward to what 2016 brings.

Lack of ironing boards and irons - the Euro's are the real experts at that! Or worse, those hotels who provide an iron and ironing board, but then fail to have any space in the hotel room to erect the ironing board, or fail to have a plug socket for the iron anywhere near the only space in the room where the ironing board can be placed! Then I get annoyed by shower heads which point at my chest. Some hotels seem to think their guests are all Oompa Loompa's in height. One ends up getting a strained back to get under the shower. Lack of sufficient plug sockets for charging multi devices... And Kevin, adding to your internet woes are those hotels which provides internet for one device only - especially when I'm overseas. Happy Christmas and seasons greetings sir!
