10 Things To Do Before A Hurricane Hits

10 Things To Do Before A Hurricane Hits

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Proper preparation and action can dramatically reduce damage and potential loss of life. The best defense against the devastation of a hurricane is preparation. Below you will find the first of a 3-Part Series BlueKey has prepared exclusively for commercial property managers, building owners and asset managers on roof hurricane preparedness.

Part 1: 10 Things To Do Before A Hurricane Hits

  1. Review your roof warranty to ensure it's up to date.
  2. Review your property insurance policy to ensure the business is adequately covered against major storm, wind and hurricane damage.
  3. Thoroughly inspect your roof and perform preventative maintenance.
  4. Repair any leaks in ceilings, walls, doors, and windows.
  5. Clear all drainage points from debris and obstructions (ie. sumps, grates, storm drains, roof drains, retention ponds, gutters, downspouts, catch basins, etc.)
  6. Clean and clear off roof by removing debris and loose objects.
  7. Check rooftop items to ensure proper securement (ie. HVAC units, fan covers, edge metals, etc.)
  8. Trim trees away from the roof by at least 3 feet.
  9. Take complete photos of your roofing system and the business premises from all angles to help substantiate insurance claims, if necessary, at a later date.
  10. Create an emergency phone list and alternate method of contact, including insurance agents, roofers, etc.

Bonus Material:

  • Revisit or establish plans for protecting computer files to make certain critical data is secured through a backup system. Assemble insurance policies, financial records, inventories and other important documents, and make duplicates to store in alternate safe places.
  • Establish written hurricane procedures for protecting business property and its contents. Inform key employees or essential staff of their specific responsibilities under the established hurricane procedures.
  • Establish Landlord and Tenant responsibilities, and find out the best way to get in contact with the landlord or how to gain access to the facility post event.
