?10 things managers do to upset their employees
Are you wanting to be a great manager?
Maybe see if you are doing any of these ten things and work had at never doing them again.
1.????Not listening to employee feedback and concerns -?Most employees have stated that numerous times they feel like their boss does not listen to them, their ideas, and their concerns over what is happening.
o???What can you do about this?
o???Become a good listener even if you think they won’t have anything to contribute. Listen.
o???Never negate what they have shared. Simply say things like, I hear what you are saying. I will look into this area. I have no idea these things were bothering you. I am happy you brought this to my attention.
2.????Not providing adequate training and resources- One huge area that concerns all employees, is not receiving training that will help them do their job. Not have access to areas, programs, software, that could help them learn and be more effective in their jobs.
o???Regular training in all areas of their life can help them feel appreciated.
o???Personal development seminars and workshops
o???Software training
o???Relationship and communication training
?
3.????Treating employees unfairly- This is such a subjective area. What is fair? Every person has their own version of fair.
o???Open and clear communication is vital
o???Listening to every challenge and when they feel heard they will share their ‘fair’.
?
4.????Setting unrealistic expectations- Again very subjective. What is unrealistic? Who determines that?
o???Ask ask ask
o???Whenever you assign new projects or areas ask your people how they feel about this new assignment. How do they respond. What is their personality?
o???Carefully show them and share with them (do not explain/mansplain) how they can be successful with this new project.
?
5.????Making employees do the same task over and over again- some people love repetitive jobs. Those might be the very staple of your business. In old time shop terms, peace work! Doing something that needs to be done, over and over. But remember, even they people who test recliners for major chair manufacturers get tired of sitting, standing, sitting, standing…
o???Find out which people need to feel valued and useful and see what you can do to create that for them
o???Help people see how they might add variation into their jobs
o???That gets back to you being a great communicator.
?
6.????Not addressing employee issues in a timely manner- Having a suggestion box seems like a great idea, doesn’t it? But people almost never use that for fear of not being anonymous. Anonymous? You’re asking? When you have not been a great communicator with your people, they will draw upon their fear of authority figures and not put their ideas, suggestions, ideas, or challenges into that silly box

o???Be transparent with your people/open door policies
o???Become a great communicator
o???When they feel heard and trust you because of your communication skills they will come talk to you about their issues long before they become a problem and/or affect other employees.
o???And even if you are waiting on something discussing it with them creates a timely connection for their issue
?
7.????Not offering enough career development opportunities- Many people do not need awards or rewards. What many people seek is position and promotion.
o???If you do not have opportunities discuss that with your people.
o???Offer to help them find better positions outside of your company and share with them why you are willing to do that for an exceptional employee
o???Career development opportunities might be future preparation like offering classes on becoming a great manager, become excellent at communication skills, and simple things like offering books like “How To Win Friends & Influence People”. Help them grow and offering hope.
?
8.??Not providing a safe and healthy work environment – What does safe and healthy look like? Not allowing the biggest sexual offender lead sexual harassment classes. Being aware that things happen at work and offer training on ho w to minimize, discourage, report, and follow up.
o???Healthy might be offering workout classes, cooking classes on how to eat healthy
o???Offering healthy alternatives at the workplace: vending machines, cafeteria, food trucks.
?
9.????Not fostering a culture of trust and respect- This is all about the culture your company offers. The integrity it demands from all employees. And the methodology for showing this is the communication that happens within your organization.
o???How you deal with things
o???How people are perceived
o???How you create community
o???How you show respect in all situations
?
10. Failing to recognize employees for their hard work and accomplishments- This one area can destroy your organization.
When someone works hard and does not receive the proper recognition, someone else takes the credit, someone doesn’t reward the rest of the team with the proper recognition. This is also a recognition for hard work and not just the success.
People work hard and many times the project changes or even dropped prior to completion.
Hard work is not it’s own reward and great managers reward their people all along the way and typically give the credit for a successful completion to the team rather than an individual.
Be careful to offer personal recognition for outstanding achievement and contribution.
