10 Things That Can Keep Freelance Copywriting Moms From Earning More

10 Things That Can Keep Freelance Copywriting Moms From Earning More

Lack of Confidence in Your Skills

Imposter syndrome is a real thing, and even the most well-known copywriters feel it from time to time. But you've got to ditch that stinkin' thinkin'. DOUBT gets you nowhere, but DOING makes things happen!

When you find yourself thinking you're not good enough to charge higher rates or take on bigger projects, call out those lies and replace them

Fear of Rejection and Failure

The fear of hearing "no" from potential clients can be paralyzing. If you let it, fear of rejection and failure can:

  • Keep you from pitching to higher-paying clients
  • Tell you you're not good enough to raise your rates
  • Make you worry you'll lose clients if you don't lowball your prices

I don't want to be stuck there, and neither do you! Here's the thing about fear that you need to understand.

Just because you feel it doesn't mean it's real. Fear is a feeling, and although feelings are valid, that doesn't mean they're REAL. Focus on what's real and in front of you, not fear.

Time Constraints and Family Responsibilities

Let's not sugarcoat it. When you're a mom, balancing family duties and work can be hard. Finding time to market their services, take on more projects, or pursue professional development isn't always easy when you have other people depending on you for survival.

Ask for help when you need it. Trade off playdates with friends. Set aside a special Grandparent Day of the week. Tag team your partner to handle the morning routine or evening bathtime.

And remember, it's important for your kids to see you going for your dreams and doing what you love. It teaches them they can do big things too.

Not Knowing How to Market Yourself

I get it. You'd rather be behind your laptop writing than posting on social media or networking with prospective clients. The problem is, your business can't grow if no one knows about it.

It's time to build a bridge and get over your reluctance to promote yourself. There are tons of tutorials and loads of information online about lead generation and marketing that can help.

Comfort Zone and Pricing Mindset

Your comfort zone might be comfy, but there's not a whole lot of room for growth. It's easy to get stuck believing you shouldn't raise your rates or take on more challenging projects. Don't fall for that!

Everything -- all the growth and progress you dream of for your business -- is waiting for you on the OTHER side of your comfort zone. Pushing outside your safety net is WORTH IT.

Lack of Professional Support and Mentorship

Entrepreneurship can be lonely when you're trying to do it all on your own. You need a network of peers and mentors who can provide guidance and support. Without support, you'll feel isolated and out of the loop.

The good news is, support is out there! If you've been looking for a place to land where you can get help and ask questions, look no further than my Wordy Mama for Freelance Copywriting Moms Facebook group.

Difficulty Setting Boundaries

I'm not the most confrontational gal in the world, so it's hard for me to set boundaries ... but that doesn't mean I don't do it. Although setting boundaries can feel scary (as in, "Are you sure I can really do that, Christa?"), it's a MUST.

You're balancing your business and your family. If you don't set boundaries with your clients and they end up overworking and underpaying you, guess who suffers? Your family and you, right?

Create your boundaries and stick to them so you can weed out unreasonable clients and protect your time and energy.

Lack of Education

Let me guess ... you don't have a business or writing degree. You're in good company then, because neither do I! The truth is, you don't have to have a business or writing degree to be a successful copywriter as long as you can write.

It IS a good idea to invest resources to help you hone your skills. Whether you check out books from your local library or purchase coaching or a course, make sure you choose to learn from trustworthy people who have gotten the results you want.

Unsupportive Environment

Does your family struggle to understand and support your dreams of a freelance copywriting business? I hope so, because an unsupportive home or social environment can be a significant barrier. If their family or friends don't understand or value what you do, it's harder to stay motivated and assertive in pursuing higher rates and bigger clients.

Financial Pressure to Accept Lower-Paying Work

Immediate financial needs can make you feel like you have to take lower-paying jobs just to make ends meet. There is something to the phrase, "Get paid, then get picky", but that doesn't mean you have to settle for working for pennies.

Be careful not to get stuck in a cycle of low-paid work that keeps you so busy you don't have time to devote to breaking through to higher-paying opportunities.

You don't have to let these obstacles stand in the way of growing your business. By being aware of them and staying alert, you can conquer them one at a time! Follow this newsletter and share it with friends!
