Some time ago we wrote an EBook ’10 Steps to Taking Control of Your Business’…
The purpose of the book was to help business owners just like you to ‘Take Control’ of the many functions within their business…
To ‘Take Control’ of their thinking which is the real game changer…
Growing a business can be hard work and along the way, you will meet many challenges…
Some minor, some major...
Last week I shared step #1... Have the right mindset with you (here's the link if you missed it https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/10-steps-taking-control-your-business-susan-gallagher/)
Step 2 ... Set Targets
“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the cat.
“I don’t much care where.” Said Alice.
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.” Said the cat.
“So long as I get SOMEWHERE.” Alice added as an explanation. “Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the cat, “If you only walk long enough.”
This brief exchange from Lewis Carroll’s tale Alice in Wonderland epitomises the way most of us approach getting what we want in life...
We have no clear idea about where we want to end up, but expect others to be able to tell us which way we should go to get there!
You’re guaranteed to end up somewhere, but is that where you really want to arrive?
One of the simplest ways to align your effort with your outcomes is to set some targets...
Personal lifestyle, goals, profit targets, sales forecasts...
All these will help you start to aim somewhere instead of working your tail off just to get, well anywhere...
What destination are you putting into your Sat Nav?
In our 90-day planning sessions, we suggest that our clients and future clients focus on 3 key areas...
Health, Wealth, and Relationships...
I find between them they pretty much cover all areas of both life and business...
I recommend always stating those goals in the positive, i.e what you want not what you don't want...
The brain doesn't recognise a negative, so if I say "Don't think of a pink elephant" you will think of a pink elephant...
So, a health goal might be to lose weight, great but when writing it as a goal it should read "I want to weigh 140lbs"...
In wealth you might want more money in the bank, be specific here I want to make £20,000 per month net profit...

Relationships aren't so easy so I recommend giving your relationship a score on a scale of 1-10 it's just a number then if you've scored that relationship a 6 the question is how do I get it to a 7 or 8
Once you've defined your goal you then come up with the 'How's'...
How will you achieve your weight goal, what are the steps you will take on a daily, weekly basis, and how will you reach your target weight?
How will you make £20,000 per month in net profit? I first step is to know what you are currently making per month (which not many business owners I initially speak to know). Now you have a gap, which will allow you to define the actions you need to take to achieve your target net profit...
Once you've established your relationship score again it's a simple set of how-to's to increase your score...
As I've mentioned many times setting a theme for your goals is a great tool...
So you can run each and every action by that theme...
Your weight theme could be 140... so your question before you eat that cream cake would be "Will eating this get me to 140lbs?"
Your profit theme could be £20k... so your question before you lease that top-of-the-range BMW would be "Will spending that money get me to £20k?"
Your relationship theme could be 8... so your questions before you agree to work late again would be "Will working late get me to an 8?"
I'm sure you get my drift...
So set your targets for the key areas in your life...
Make them meaningful for YOU...
Give them a theme...
And...
Then run all your actions by that theme...
I promise you this works so give it a go...
