10 Steps to Start a Business with Confidence

Are you a faith-driven woman, 35 or older, tired of living paycheck to paycheck, and longing to start a business that builds God’s kingdom, serves your community, and creates a legacy? You are not alone. Many women feel called to entrepreneurship but struggle with fear, intimidation, and the overwhelming guesswork of getting started.

The good news? You CAN build a business that aligns with your God-given purpose while creating financial freedom and impact. Here’s how:

1. Shift Your Mindset from Employee to CEO

One of the biggest roadblocks to success is mindset. If you've worked a traditional job for years, transitioning to business ownership requires a renewal of thought. Stop asking, “Can I do this?” and start affirming, “God has equipped me for this.” (Philippians 4:13) Recognizing that your business is part of your divine assignment will help you step forward in faith.

2. Identify Your God-Given Purpose

Your business should align with your spiritual calling. Reflect on:

  • What are your natural gifts?
  • What problems are you passionate about solving?
  • What do people frequently come to you for advice or help?

Your answers will reveal a business idea that serves others while fulfilling you.

3. Overcome Fear and Intimidation

Fear keeps many women stuck in analysis paralysis. Scripture reminds us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) Replace fear with faith by:

  • Speaking daily affirmations over yourself and your business.
  • Seeking mentorship from women who have walked this journey.
  • Taking small, bold steps daily.

4. Validate Your Business Idea

Before diving in, ensure there’s demand for your product or service. Ask yourself:

  • Does my business solve a real problem?
  • Who is my ideal customer?
  • Will people pay for this?

Conduct market research by talking to potential customers, running surveys, and observing competitors.

5. Create a Simple, Faith-Based Business Plan

A well-thought-out plan helps eliminate guesswork. Outline:

  • Mission & Vision: Why does this business exist?
  • Target Audience: Who do you serve?
  • Revenue Model: How will you make money?
  • Marketing Plan: How will you reach your audience?
  • Operational Plan: How will you deliver your product/service?

Proverbs 16:3 reminds us, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” Take time to seek His guidance as you strategize.

6. Start Small with What You Have

You don’t need a huge investment to start. Many SHEBoss Academy students begin with minimal resources by:

  • Using free or low-cost tools (Canva, Zoom, Wix, or social media).
  • Offering a beta version of their product/service.
  • Leveraging their network to get their first customers.

Remember, “Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.” (Zechariah 4:10)

7. Establish Your Online Presence

In today’s digital world, an online presence is crucial. Create:

  • A professional website (even a simple landing page works!).
  • Social media pages (focus on platforms where your audience is active).
  • Valuable content that showcases your expertise and faith.

Your visibility = credibility. The more you show up, the more trust you build.

8. Learn to Sell with Confidence

Sales can feel intimidating, but selling is simply serving. If you believe in your product/service, you owe it to others to share it! Shift your mindset from “I don’t want to seem pushy” to “I’m helping solve a problem.”

Biblical truth: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16) Your business is your ministry—embrace it boldly!

9. Develop Kingdom-Focused Financial Stewardship

A profitable business funds your purpose and blesses others. Start by:

  • Separating personal & business finances.
  • Creating a budget for startup and growth.
  • Pricing your services/products profitably (don’t undercharge!).
  • Tithing and sowing into kingdom projects.

10. Surround Yourself with a Faith-Driven Community

You were never meant to build alone! The right community provides:

  • Accountability to keep moving forward.
  • Encouragement when you face challenges.
  • Resources to help you grow faster.
