10 steps to reduce worker absences this winter

10 steps to reduce worker absences this winter

There are several actions that can help businesses avoid winter flu and maintain a healthy workplace. Here are some effective strategies:

  • Promote Vaccination: Encourage employees to get the flu vaccine. You could even consider organising on-site vaccination clinics to make it convenient.
  • Enhance Hygiene Practices: Provide ample supplies of tissues, soap, hand sanitizers, and disinfectant wipes. Encourage regular hand washing and proper respiratory etiquette (covering coughs and sneezes). Utilise some of the lessons learned during the Covid Pandemic.
  • Clean and Disinfect: Regularly clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, keyboards, and shared equipment.
  • Improve Ventilation: Ensure good airflow in the workplace by opening windows or using air purifiers. Proper ventilation can reduce the concentration of airborne viruses.
  • Encourage Sick Employees to Stay Home: Implement policies that support employees staying home when they are sick to prevent spreading the flu to others.
  • Flexible Work Arrangements: Allow remote work or flexible hours for employees who are feeling unwell but can still work from home.
  • Educate Employees: Provide information on flu prevention, symptoms, and the importance of staying home when sick. Use posters, emails, and meetings to spread awareness.
  • Promote Healthy Habits: Encourage a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep, to boost the immune system.
  • Provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Supply masks and other PPE to employees, especially those in close contact with others or in high-risk areas.
  • Monitor and Respond: Keep track of flu cases within the workplace and respond promptly to any outbreaks by reinforcing preventive measures and possibly increasing cleaning frequency.

Implementing these strategies can help reduce the spread of flu and keep your workplace healthy during the winter months. This will be good for your staff as well as good for your business.
