10 Signs You Are An Awful Boss (& How To Become A Boss People Admire) ??????

Being a boss is hard work, but being a boss that is respected is much harder. I've seen the positive effects that excellent leadership can have on a team as the HR Manager at SMT Labs, but I've also seen the negative effects that ineffective leadership can have. Are you concerned that you may belong to the latter group? These are ten indicators that you could be a terrible manager, and more importantly, how to change your ways and become the manager that your team looks up to. ??

1. You Don’t Listen ??

The Sign:

Your team feels unheard and unvalued.

The Fix:

Practice active listening. Make eye contact, nod in understanding, and respond thoughtfully. Schedule regular one-on-ones to show your team you value their input.

2. You Micro-Manage ???♂?

The Sign:

You’re always hovering over your team, checking their work excessively.

The Fix:

Trust your team’s abilities. Set clear expectations and deadlines, then step back and allow them the freedom to do their jobs.

3. You Take Credit for Their Work ??

The Sign:

You’re always the one in the spotlight, regardless of who did the work.

The Fix:

Celebrate your team’s achievements publicly. Share credit where it’s due and show genuine appreciation for their efforts.

4. You’re Inaccessible ???

The Sign:

Your team finds it hard to get in touch with you when they need guidance.

The Fix:

Keep your door (or virtual door) open. Make yourself available and approachable, whether through regular office hours or being responsive to messages.

5. You Lack Empathy ??

The Sign:

You’re unaware or indifferent to your team’s personal challenges.

The Fix:

Cultivate empathy. Check in on your team’s well-being, and show that you care about them as people, not just as employees.

6. You Play Favorites ??

The Sign:

You consistently give preferential treatment to certain employees.

The Fix:

Be fair and impartial. Evaluate everyone based on their performance and contributions, not on personal biases.

7. You Don’t Provide Feedback ???

The Sign:

Your team is in the dark about how they’re doing.

The Fix:

Give regular, constructive feedback. This helps your team grow and improves overall performance.

8. You Avoid Conflict ????

The Sign:

Problems fester because you don’t address them.

The Fix:

Handle conflicts directly and professionally. Address issues promptly and work towards a resolution.

9. You Resist Change ????

The Sign:

You’re stuck in your ways and refuse to adopt new methods.

The Fix:

Embrace change. Be open to new ideas and encourage innovation within your team.

10. You Don’t Invest in Development ??

The Sign:

Your team feels stagnant and lacks growth opportunities.

The Fix:

Invest in your team’s development. Provide training, mentorship, and opportunities for advancement.

Being a great boss is about caring for your team and always improving, not about perfection. We at SMT Labs think that being a leader is a journey. You can change from being a terrible boss to a respected leader by identifying these symptoms and taking action to fix them. ??
