10 reasons your team need to be better at influencing and negotiating in the current business environment.

Reaching agreement and gaining buy in are critical at the best of times – but when the market is challenged and we now find ourselves sitting at the onset of a potential set of protracted headwinds, being able to manage and influence the course of negotiations can often be the difference between a win and asking oneself what do we need to do next time.

Here’s ten quick reasons why your team needs to be better at influencing and negotiating.

1. A clear ability to effectively influence across a range of situations allows for a higher percentage of Successful outcomes delivered.

?2. Sharp and concise communication when influencing delivers productivity gains via a reduction on time spent to get to a desired outcome.

?3. A skilled negotiator knows when they are influencing in advance of the other party - leading to a directional advantage when pursing your desired outcome.

4. Better influencing and negotiating skills create awareness of when the other party is softly trying to nudge /influence you to head towards their desired outcome.

5. Advance influencing and negotiating skills enhance individuals confidence and empower them to make sound principled decisions

6. Improved negotiation skills allow for improved team cohesion and internal management of challenges, disputes and disagreements

7. The ability to manage challenging clients and conversations consistently separates top performing organisations from the rest of the pack.

8. Skilled negotiators are able to influence a discussion to get to the core issue without making it personal

9. An effective influencer/negotiator always has the tools and the ability to manage and mold the course of a difficult conversation

10. Skilled negotiators seek to understand and as such ask better questions

Like many traits influencing and negotiating are skills that can at first be learned and then improved upon.

Using the ENS process framework and creating a common language to manage influencing moments and negotiations both internally within your organisation and externally will provide your team with a competitive advantage. Helping to unpack the often times complex and challenging task of reaching your desired outcome.
