10 Reasons You Should Look For A Job and Interview While You Have A Job

Being rejected feels better when you've already been accepted.

I once met a man who was very happy in his role and had been with his company for many years. He shared that he still applies to jobs and goes on interviews to keep his skills sharp and to boost his confidence.

What a brilliant idea!

So I wanted to share my top 10 reasons why you should look for a job and interview while you have a job.

  1. You have less pressure: When you have a job, there's no urgency to accept the first offer that comes your way. You can wait for the right position and negotiate better terms without the looming pressure of bills and expenses. You want to practice the state of flow, and it's much easier to do that when you aren't pressured.
  2. Your confidence is higher: Being employed can boost your confidence in interviews. You come across as desirable to potential employers since you're not running desperation energy. Remember, speaking negatively about your current situation can be perceived as a lack of ability to problem-solve.
  3. You have better negotiation leverage: Since you aren't in a huge rush, you can ask for what you really want vs. feeling like you need to settle.
  4. You'll have continuous income: Searching for a job while employed ensures there's no break in your income, allowing you to support yourself and your loved ones without financial stress.
  5. You expand your network: This one is my favorite. Interviewing allows you to meet new people in your industry, expanding your professional network. Even if you don't take the job, these connections can be invaluable in the future.
  6. You keep your skills sharp: The process of job searching and interviewing hones various skills – from updating your resume to handling tricky interview questions. It's good practice, even if you decide to stay put.
  7. You get to understand your worth: By interviewing and receiving job offers, you gain a clearer picture of your market value. This can be beneficial whether you switch jobs or negotiate a raise in your current role.
  8. Provides a psychological safety net: Knowing you have options outside your current job can provide a psychological safety net, reducing anxiety and stress related to job security.
  9. You stay up-to-date on industry insights: Interviewing with other companies offers a window into industry standards, emerging trends, and new technologies, ensuring you're always in the loop.
  10. You'll have a backup plan: Given the unpredictability of industries and job markets, having a proactive approach means you're ready to adapt and transition if unexpected changes occur.

Bonus Tip: Always Keep Your Resume Up to Date

Regularly update your resume by syncing with nature’s season cycles. This practice not only prepares you for opportunities but also recognizes your evolving skills and milestones, aligning with both personal growth and professional aspirations.
