10 Questions to Ask Yourself When Selling Your Home

So you are thinking of selling your home. First of all, congratulations! This is a big step. The process can feel overwhelming, especially for someone who is undertaking selling their home for the first time.

If you are just getting started, try asking yourself the ten questions listed below. They are the questions I ask every one of my clients before we even start the process of putting their home on the market.

These questions are tailored to get you thinking about the home’s value and what you are looking for from this sale— “the best price” is what most people would say, and you should also consider your timeline and your home’s comparability to other homes in the current market.

Ask yourself these 10 questions before getting started:

1. What is your timetable for making the big move?
2. What major improvements have you made to the property?
3. What are the most desirable features of the property?
4. Is there anything about the home you feel could negatively affect the property value?
5. If you were a buyer looking at this home, what are some features you might change? Alternately, are there any home improvement projects you would have liked to complete but never got to?
6. What features are you looking for in your next home that are the same or different from the features in this house?
7. Who do you think is the ideal buyer for your house?
8. Are there any other people who would be involved in the decision to sell the property? For example, is it in a trust or are there co-owners?
9. What price would you ideally like to sell your home for? How did you determine this price?
10. How many real estate agents are you looking to interview before deciding on one? What criteria are you looking for, and how will you know when you have found the right agent?
