10 Predictions for PR in 2025: Navigating the Future Landscape

As we start 2025 (happy new year by the way!), the world of public relations (PR) is poised for transformation. With advancements in technology—especially AI—and rapid shifts in media consumption and habits, businesses and PR agencies have to adapt before they’re left behind.?

Here are 10 predictions Hype Lab has for the PR landscape in 2025:

  • Someone Is Going to Get Burned by AI: While AI continues to streamline PR tasks, there will be a notable misstep by a company overly reliant on AI. An incorrect AI-generated statement could lead to an embarrassing statement—or worse. Trusting AI without human oversight may result in "hallucinations" or even potentially bad advice during high-stakes situations. Autopilot is great, but sometimes you manually have to land the plane.

  • Authenticity Is King: As tech takes a front seat in communications, the backlash will emphasize authenticity. Consumers will prioritize brands that offer genuine stories over automated, generic content. AI is great for formulaic communications, but the best brands make more human connections.
  • PR Gets More Personal: AI's ability to analyze consumer data at scale will allow PR professionals to create personalized campaigns targeting micro-audiences with tailored messaging. Smart PR pros already look for placements that reach niche audiences, but the tools will allow for much more precise targeting.
  • More Data-Driven Decisions: Forward-looking PR firms have long leaned into data, but data-driven strategies are increasingly the backbone of PR campaigns. Businesses will increasingly rely on analytics to measure campaign effectiveness and even pinpoint the precise impact of certain PR tactics. There will of course be bad data that leads to poor decisions, but the days of “trust me” are coming to an end.
  • Hybrid Events Become Mainstream: The pandemic-fueled pivot to digital events has morphed into hybrid experiences that blend physical and virtual elements, tailoring interactions to different audience segments. People get bored of webinars but are also less enthusiastic about tiring business trips. A lot of businesses are settling into the happy medium of hybrid work, and the same is true for PR.
  • Crisis Management Moves Faster: Instant information sharing means any PR crisis could become a global issue within minutes. Even worse, armies of bots are ready to amplify bad news. Companies will need agile response teams that can act quickly and decisively and make good decisions on the fly.
  • Ethical Storytelling Becomes More Important: With misinformation prevalent, transparency and ethical storytelling will be vital. Brands must prove credible, reliable, and ethical through every piece of content they release. Bots talking to bots is certainly a business strategy for some companies, but it’s not the way to build an audience that trusts you.
  • AR Becomes Bigger in PR: We’ve been saying this for a while, but I hope it becomes more true this year. Augmented reality (AR) will play a more significant role in PR efforts, providing consumers with immersive experiences and transforming media relations by offering storytellers new dimensions.
  • Media Monitoring Tools Get Better: AI-driven tools like Hype Lab’s WhoCoversIt.com will continue to improve the art of curating media lists, helping PR professionals more efficiently identify and target the right journalists. We won’t give away all of our secrets, but if you’re basing your reporter search on what that journalist has already published, you’re looking at where the puck was, not where it’s going.
  • Employee Advocates Get Empowered: Employees who are skilled at communications will increasingly act as brand ambassadors. Businesses are recognizing the value of empowering their workforce to advocate genuinely and authentically for their brand across personal networks, and are more willing to give them the right messaging toolkit and empower these employees to spread the gospel.

The PR landscape in 2025 is going to be unpredictable, but one thing we can bank on is that it will deliver challenges and opportunities that will define how brands communicate and engage with the world. We’ll come back at the end of the year and see what we got right and wrong, but this is how we see the next year in public relations.
