The 10-Minute Practice That's Transforming High-Performance Teams

The 10-Minute Practice That's Transforming High-Performance Teams

In the whirlwind of deadlines, meetings, and endless tasks, when was the last time you truly paused to reflect? As a performance coach, I've discovered that reflection isn't just a luxury - it's a crucial leadership skill that separates agile leaders from fragile ones.

In 2021, while leading a successful corporate career at Nestlé, I made a discovery through reflection that changed my life's trajectory.?

I was what many would consider a 'rising star' - winning awards, managing five diverse high-impact roles, and being recognized among the top 2% of employees. On paper, my career was soaring. Yet, something felt missing.

During my annual reflection ritual, where I review achievements, learnings, gratitude, and next steps, I noticed something striking: while most of my achievements were tied to my corporate job, the ones that brought me the most fulfillment were related to coaching.

A simple question from my husband became a turning point: "Daya, what do you like to do in your free time?" My answer revealed a valuable insight - I was naturally drawn to personal development and helping others achieve their goals.

This reflection led me to explore the right role where I could make the most impact. I made a strategic shift to program management, this change allowed me to blend my business expertise with my passion for coaching, creating more value for both the organization and my team members.

Today, I can tell you that because of that decision - a step more aligned with my passion and purpose as a result of reflection - I'm now doing what I love full-time.

This transformative experience taught me something crucial: the quality of our lives depends deeply on the questions we ask ourselves. In my journey to understand and improve my reflection practice, I discovered a powerful tool that has been helping people find clarity for over two millennia - the Socratic method.

You see, while reflection is an intrinsic human ability, our daily lives often leave us running on autopilot - rushing from home to work, back home, cooking, sleeping, and repeating the cycle. When was the last time you truly sat in silence with your thoughts? When did you last question your assumptions and beliefs?

The ancient Greeks, particularly Socrates, understood something profound about human excellence: the highest form of wisdom comes from questioning ourselves and others. Socrates believed that self-knowledge was the key to wisdom, and this knowledge could be obtained through thoughtful reflection. One of his famous statements was, 'The only true wisdom is knowing you know nothing' - a powerful reminder to stay open to learning and questioning our own assumptions.

What makes the Socratic method so powerful for reflection is its ability to cut through our mental clutter and get to the heart of what truly matters. Through my work as a coach, speaker,? and my own personal practice, I've found that asking the right questions can unlock insights that transform lives.

Using the Socratic method, here's how you can deepen your reflection practice:

  1. Start with Foundational Questions: ? What are my core values? ? What are my personal and professional goals? ? Where do I find the most joy in my work?
  2. Dig Deeper with Follow-up Questions: ? How do my actions align with my values? ? What patterns do I notice in my successes? ? What assumptions am I making?
  3. Challenge Your Thinking: ? What evidence supports my beliefs? ? What alternative perspectives exist? ? What would happen if I changed my approach?"

Making Reflection a Practice Practical Tips:

  1. Schedule "Reflection Blocks" in your calendar
  2. Create a reflection ritual (time, place, method)
  3. Use journaling prompts
  4. Practice the pause before important decisions
  5. Implement regular review cycles

Remember John Dewey's wisdom: reflection without action is incomplete.?

Here's how to turn insights into impact:

  • Document your insights
  • Set specific action items
  • Create accountability measures
  • Review and adjust regularly

As executive coach Jennifer Porter notes, the most challenging leaders to work with are those who don't reflect. Don't let that be you. Start your reflection practice today - your future self will thank you.
