10 Lessons from My First Year at a Startup: From Big Tech to the Frontlines of Innovation

As I celebrate my one-year anniversary at a startup after years in big software companies, I'm excited to share the invaluable lessons I've learned. This journey has been transformative, challenging, and incredibly rewarding.

1. Unicorns are Built, Not Born

"Building a tech startup requires total devotion. It requires people who are obsessed to make the company work, and just like elite athletes, they are 100% supported by their families." - Louis Jonckheere, Showpad

It takes an exceptional team and a supportive community to go from zero to one. My heartfelt thanks to Simone Vandewynckel , my family, and friends for their unwavering support!

2. Pioneering a Data Revolution is hard, especially in the first innings

"An invention that is quickly accepted will turn out to be a rather trivial alteration of something that has already existed." - Edwin Land, Polaroid

Translating our unique value proposition into tangible business impact has been our greatest challenge. We're not just launching a SaaS product; we're creating a new category. It's a journey of persistence and continuous education.

3. The Make-or-Break Power of Hiring

"I will always choose a lazy & intelligent person to do a hard job because he will find an easy way to do it." - Bill Gates, Microsoft

In a startup, every hire is critical. The consequences of a misfit extend far beyond financial implications, affecting our agility and decision-making. Time is our most precious resource, making the right hires paramount.

4. The Reality of Startup Life vs. the Highlight Reel

"We are our choices. Build yourself a great story." - Jeff Bezos, Amazon

This year has been the most intense learning experience of my 20-year software career. The daily grind of refining our go-to-market strategy, product-market fit, and value proposition is challenging but incredibly rewarding.

5. The Non-Linear Path to Success

"Don't worry about failure; you only have to be right once." - Drew Houston, Dropbox

Resilience is key. Bad days are inevitable, but they're followed by breakthroughs. Celebrate the wins, learn from the setbacks, and keep pushing forward.

6. The Intensity of Startup Time

"Timing, perseverance, and ten years of trying will eventually make you look like an overnight success." - Biz Stone, Twitter

In a startup, a day can feel like a week. With customers and colleagues across 15 countries, the business never sleeps. Adaptability is crucial to thrive in this dynamic environment.

7. Customer-Centricity is Non-Negotiable

"There is only one boss. The customer." - Sam Walton, Walmart

In SaaS, customer satisfaction is our lifeblood. Our Product Success and CSM teams are the heartbeat of our customer relationships, ensuring we stay attuned to their needs and evolve alongside them.

8. Operating with Formula 1 Precision

"You jump off a cliff and you assemble an airplane on the way down." - Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn

Success in a startup requires the seamless coordination of a high-performance team. Every role is crucial, and mistakes can be costly. Thank you to all my fellow "Speeders" for your dedication and drive!

9. Balancing Short-Term Action with Long-Term Vision

"The most dangerous poison is the feeling of achievement. The antidote is to every evening think what can be done better tomorrow." - Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA

The ability to switch between operational tasks and strategic planning is essential. We must deliver daily results while continuously innovating for the future.

10. The Crucial Art of Disconnecting

"Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." - Steve Jobs, Apple

I'm still learning to find balance. While I'm proud of our achievements, I recognize the importance of disconnecting to recharge and gain perspective. It's a work in progress, but a vital one for long-term success and well-being.

As we look to the future, I'm more excited than ever about the potential of our startup. Here's to the challenges overcome, lessons learned, and the incredible journey ahead. Onward to #Decacorn status!

Your ability to use the right person at the right time to win a deal is legendary Your predictive chess play moves up to checkmate in a sale is extra-ordinary But while most sales with these abilities are arrogant You are a kind, funny, and emphatic person that makes other people feel important It's great to have you with us, Mr. VP, and Let’s keep having fun and winning deals.
