10 Lessons for Building a Thriving Tech Community
Building a strong tech community is not just about numbers and hosting events. It's about creating a space where people feel supported, inspired, fostering genuine connections, and providing value.
As an international student who arrived in Vancouver in 2019 to pursue a fully-funded master's degree, I embarked on a journey that would teach me invaluable lessons about building a tech community from the ground up. Here are the ten key insights I've gained along the way:
Start Small, Dream Big
My journey in building a tech community began with humble 10-person meetups as a Google Developer Groups (GDG) Community lead. These initial gatherings were intimate and focused, allowing for meaningful conversations and connections among participants. I vividly remember the excitement and nervousness of organizing my first event, where we discussed emerging technologies and shared our experiences in the tech industry. Each participant brought unique insights, and together we laid the groundwork for a supportive community.
I was hosting my first International Women's Day event including ~40 participants three months after arriving in Canada and became a Women Techmakers Ambassador to foster a learning space where women are welcomed equally. This taught me that every big achievement starts with small, consistent steps.
Key Takeaway:?Don't be discouraged by small beginnings. Each event, no matter the size, is a stepping stone towards your larger goals.
Building from Scratch
Balancing a full-time master's degree, teaching and research assistant roles, and side hustles while nurturing a fledgling community was challenging. However, it taught me the importance of persistence and time management in community building.
Crucially, having a supportive teammate like Shubhra Sarker , who has been there from the beginning, teaching passionately even when there were only 10 people, has been instrumental in the community's success.
Key Takeaway:?Effective time management and unwavering persistence are crucial when juggling multiple responsibilities while building a community.
Adapt and Overcome
The 2020 pandemic forced a pivot to online events. Multiple GDG Communities came together to organize the Great North DevFest, Pacific devfest with Don Ward Kübra Zengin Corinna Luu Google Developers North America , International Women's Day celebrations online, demonstrating the importance of flexibility in community collaboration and leadership.
Key Takeaway:?Adaptability is key in community building. Be ready to pivot your strategies in response to unexpected challenges.
Foster Genuine Connections
As in-person interaction resumed, our DevFest 2022 marked a significant milestone with over 150 signups. This experience highlighted the irreplaceable value of face-to-face interactions in community building.
Key Takeaway:?While digital connections are valuable, in-person interactions create deeper, more meaningful relationships within your community.
Embrace Consistent Growth
From 80 participants at Google I/O Extended to 250 at DevFest 2023, our community has shown steady growth. This taught me the importance of setting ambitious yet achievable goals. Here are some examples of our consistent growth:

Key Takeaway:?Consistent growth comes from setting realistic goals and steadily working towards them, celebrating each milestone along the way.
Find Your Niche
We prioritized learning opportunities through workshops and sessions, differentiating our community in a crowded space. This unique approach helped differentiate our community in a crowded space. 2024 promises even more exciting developments that showcase our niche focus on AI and tech education: Our 2024 plans showcase this niche focus:
AI Conference:?Aiming to attract 300+ participants, this summit will be a major event in the AI community, featuring leading experts and innovative sessions.
By focusing on these specialized AI and tech events, we've carved out a unique position in the community, offering high-value, targeted experiences that align with the interests and needs of our audience.
Key Takeaway:?Identify and focus on your community's unique strengths to stand out in a saturated market.
Experiment and Innovate
Diversifying event formats kept our community engaged. This strategy not only keeps the community engaged but also attracts a wider audience by catering to diverse interests and preferences. For instance, incorporating both formal workshops and informal meetups allows participants to choose their preferred style of interaction, fostering a more inclusive environment.
Key Takeaway:?Don't be afraid to experiment with different event formats. Innovation keeps your community fresh and engaging.
Diversity and Inclusivity
Creating a welcoming environment for everyone is essential. Our International Women's Day event, attracting over 100 participants, celebrated and empowered women in tech. By prioritizing diversity in our events and speaker lineups, we've created a richer, more vibrant community.
Key Takeaway:?Prioritizing diversity and inclusivity creates a richer, more vibrant community that reflects the diverse nature of the tech industry.
Quality Over Quantity
Focusing on delivering exceptional experiences rather than chasing numbers has been crucial. A smaller, more engaged community often proves more valuable than a large, passive one.
Key Takeaway:?Prioritize the quality of interactions and experiences over mere numbers. Engaged members are the backbone of a thriving community.
Empower Others to Lead
The true measure of a community builder's success lies in empowering others. By stepping back and allowing community members to take the spotlight, we've created a sustainable and inclusive environment.
Key Takeaway:?A truly successful community is one where members feel empowered to contribute, lead, and shape the community's future.
These experiences have taught me that building a strong tech community is about creating a space where people feel supported and inspired. It's about fostering genuine connections and providing value that goes beyond networking opportunities.
As we continue to grow and evolve, these lessons remain at the core of our community-building efforts, ensuring we create a thriving ecosystem that fosters growth, collaboration, and a strong sense of belonging.
