The 10 key principles of good Digital Design | Principle 4
Good Digital Design is explorative.
Believing that you always know in advance which solution will work is na?ve or, at best, romantically glorified. This is especially true for innovative fields such as digitalization. Good Digital Design is explorative - it explores different solution variants, does not tie itself down to solutions at an unnecessarily early stage, and also offers users different options for achieving their goals during operation. From the latter, it draws conclusions from user behavior in order to identify good paths and develop these paths further.
So, what does this mean for the DDP?
A DDP cultivates the attitude of exploration. Through his or her work, a DDP helps ensure that the right techniques are used to design good digital solutions based on different drafts. Prototypes are an important tool for exploring alternative solution options at an early stage. Paper prototypes are popular at an initial stage to explore alternative user journeys in a lightweight way. Technical prototypes can also be equally useful, for example, to test the connection of different service providers for payment services or weather data at an early stage and thus select a suitable (digital) material. Exploring the problem and solution space is a progressive process for the DDP - especially for so-called wicked problems. Here, the DDP employs a number of techniques to continuously gain a better understanding of the problem and thus design better alternative solutions. Finally, DDPs seek feedback from customers and users to further develop existing functionalities of a solution. This is the bridge to the 3rd principle, because the ability to evolve is the basis for further development.
