India established communities everywhere around the world including islands in the Caribbean as well as the Pacific and Indian oceans since the beginning of the 19th century. Here are 10 interesting facts about the Indian migrants around the world.?

1. One in twenty migrants worldwide is born in India.?

18 million Indians were living overseas as of 2020, making India the largest diaspora population in the world. Ever since the UN started tracking migrant origins in 1990, India has been among the world’s top origin countries of migrants. Immigration started early in India around the colonial era, when Indians were forced to migrate to other countries for plantation and construction work and later relocated to different colonies by the British. The 1974 partition of India and Pakistan instigated another wave of immigration throughout South Asia. In today's era, Westen, European and Middle-eastern countries are the top destinations for Indians overseas.?

2. India is the top remittance recipient country.?

India’s total inward remittances exceed 86 billion dollars, which makes it the top recipient of remittances from migrants across the globe, with the US being the major source accounting for over 20% of these funds. Remittance inflow to GDP (%) in India was reported at 3.17 % in 2020, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognized sources.

3. UAE is the favorite destination of Indians.

Indians make up to 30 % of the population in United Arab Emirates (UAE), with approximately 3.5 million Indian immigrants. Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the most popular destinations for Indian migrants in the UAE. Around 15% of the diaspora reside in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the other half reside in the Northern Emirates including Dubai. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh respectively are the most represented Indian states in these destinations. Approximately 60% of the Indian migrants are employed in construction companies, municipalities, and agricultural farms. 20% work as clerical staff, shop assistants, salesmen, and accountants. 15% of migrants are professionals and businessmen.??

4. The US is the second most popular destination for Indian migrants.

The US is home to over 2.7 million people who originate from India as of 2022 making it the second most popular destination for Indian migrants. California has the highest congregation of Indian-born residents with around 20% Indian migrants, followed by Texas and New Jersey with 10% occupancy for each state. Management, Business, Science, and Arts occupations are predominated by Indian-born immigrants with 76% workforce as compared to 41% native workers and 35% workers from other nations. Around 12% of Indian migrants work in Sales and Office Occupations.

5.?The US hosts the majority of female Indian immigrants.

The majority of Indian immigrants across the globe are men, standing at 10 million, Indian women constitute only 48.2% of the total. However, the US hosts the maximum number of female Indian immigrants with a total of 933,216.?Females in India?are more likely to move to the US as compared to males. In the financial year 2018, 114,550 female Indian immigrants received Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) status while the male Indian immigrants got only 102,012 LPR status.

6. 8.7% of Immigrants in the UK are Indian- born.

India has been the leading nation among the UK immigrants for years, but recently Poland took over India by only a couple hundred immigrants standing at 835,975 as of 2022 while Indian immigrants stand at 835,359 which accounts for 8.7% of the total number of immigrants in the UK. Leicester was home to the largest Indian population in?England and Wales, with 6.6% of all Indian people living there, followed by Birmingham (4.6%) and Harrow (4.5%).?31% of Indian workers were employed in professional occupations such as engineering, teaching or law which is the highest among all ethnic groups. 26.4% of Indian immigrants were employed in the public administration, education, and health sector. A further 20.9% were employed in the banking, finance, and insurance sector, the highest of all ethnic groups.

7. Indian immigrants dominate the majority of the Gulf Region.

While the UAE is the most popular destination for Indian immigrants, the other Gulf nations are also majorly dominated by Indians. Saudi Arabia constitutes 2.5 million Indian-born residents who make up 19 % of total immigrants, followed by Oman with 1.3 million Indian-origin residents. Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain have major Indian occupancy with 1.15 million, 0.7 million, and 0.3 million Indian immigrants respectively.?

8. Canada hosts the 8th largest Indian diaspora.

Approximately 0.72 million Indian migrants reside in Canada followed by China and Phillippines with 0.69 million and 0.63 million migrants respectively. The permanent residencies offered to Indians by Canada increased from 39,340 in 2016 to 431,645 in 2022.?

9. India’s migrant population comprises a larger proportion of religious minorities.

Religious minorities from India such as Muslims and Christians are more likely to migrate overseas. A study shows Christian immigrants from India account for 19% of the total immigrants as compared to only 3% Christian population in India and Muslim immigrants account for 27% of total immigrants as compared to 14% total population in India.?

10. Our neighbors Bhutan and Nepal also host a substantial amount of Indian immigrants.

95% of Bhutan’s immigrants are Indian-born. There are 46,974 Indian immigrants in Bhutan, followed by 949 immigrants originating from China and 751 immigrants coming from Nepal. Nepal, on the other hand, hosts 426,941 Indian immigrants who constitute 89.82% of total immigrants in the nation. Other popular immigrant origins in Nepal are Bhutan and China with 27,502 and 19,428 immigrants from the respective countries.?
