10 Industries that will grow post Covid-19

While some have already shown significant growth during Covid-19 phase, rest should see a boom in the coming months.

Here is my take on industries that will see a boost due to COVID-19

1.      Cleanliness and Hygiene Products:

Good hygiene practices will become a norm once life resumes back. Frequent use of sanitizers, use of mask in public will be a common practice.

Infact fashion brands have started manufacturing designer masks. https://www.forbes.com/sites/stephanrabimov/2020/04/27/20-fashion-brands-getting-most-creative-with-coronavirus-face-masks/#45d892b57599

Governments shall install hand sanitizing stations in public places. There will also be disinfectant service providers for homes and complexes

2.      E-Learning:

This is an obvious one. With educational institutes conducting their annual curriculums from home, both education institutes and students/parents have realized that leaning from home is possible. With rising costs of tuitions fees, scarcity of quality educationists and need to reach wider masses virtual classrooms, e-learning modules and digitized examinations are the future. This will present an opportunity for end to end educational solutions including learning modules, interactive videos, tests, assignments, and attendance, everything bundled in one. Also, taking into the consideration the restrictions in travel post COVID, students planning to study abroad for graduation and post-graduation will avail their formal education from virtual classrooms. As per recent studies 63% of university experts predicted prestigious universities globally would have full courses available online in the coming decade. Learning is also extending beyond conventional education, we are already seeing increased uptake of platforms like Coursera, Udemy, Unacedemy for professional skill upgrade and also, various platforms for pursuing hobbies like cooking, dancing, photography.

Personally Experience:

I used the time to upgrade my skills and got certified in Google Garage/Academy in Digital Marketing, Advanced Analytics, Data Studios and Udemy’s AI for business managers .

I also explored my curiosity & got certified in “The Essentials of Bartending” by European Bartender School. #ReadytoParty post covid :)

3.      Cloud/Dark Kitchen:

Mobility of people shall stay reduced even post COVID-19, were either by government directives or by personal measures people will avoid going to crowded places. But, the desire to eat tasty cuisines from around the world will stay and food deliveries will increase. In such situation owning large establishment which huge seating capacities will no longer be required, restaurants will look to expand quickly with smaller spaces, this will help them reduce opex aswell in rentals, salaries and electricity bills. Companies like Fasoos, Box 8 already have multiple brands in the market operating as Cloud kitchen. Soon we will see larger established brand join them in this business model

4.      Last mile delivery & E-commerce:

“I am going to the mall this weekend”, we won’t here this too soon and too frequently. But will that stop people from shopping? Customers from all age groups across different Tiers of cities and towns will start shopping online, either for daily essentials like Groceries, to fashion, electronics, furniture, medicines etc. With existing giants like Amazon, Flipkart, BigBasket and Jio’s entry with JioMart, we can expect a disruption of the already growing industry soon. Not only ecommerce but a phygital setup will also emerge strong like Dmart Ready. Also, supply chain improvements to optimise transportation, cold chains and cost reductions will become essential

5.      Digital Content & Online Streaming:

Another large crowd gathering hub shall be Movie Theatres. Covid has seen a 100%+ increase in daily active users for OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Youtube etc and Average time spent is also 2x vs pre-Covid. This is not only because existing users like you and me.

I introduced my father to Netflix and Amazon Prime during COVID-19 and he has shown what binge watching actually means.

Not only that, he has been promoting the quality and quantity of content available on these platforms to his peers and friends and gotten them to use it aswell. Viewing sporting events and online only movie launches will happen often going ahead. Movies like Trolls World Tour saw an online only release & within three weeks the sequel’s digital release actually ended up generating more revenue for Universal Pictures than the original did in five months in 2016

6.      Gaming Industry

How many of you have played Ludo or Bingo with your family and friend in past 60 days? The controversial App Houseparty saw an 8142% increase active users recently. That is massive. Like Digital Content this will be another industry will shall appeal audience from various age groups. Gaming App and inbuilt games on social media will all see an increase post COVID. The worry is it will give result to a rise in “gaming disorder” as identified by World Health Organisation.

7.      Video Conferencing & Cyber Security:

I have listed them together because they will go hand in hand. Companies that are exploring the option of permanent work from home for certain percentage of employees shall continue the need of Video Conferencing, but along with that security of vital company data will also be extremely important. Recently Apps like Google’s Hangout, Duo, Zoom, and Microsoft’s Teams etc have seen 70-100% increase in daily active users, also the stock price of Zoom doubled on NASDAQ post the pandemic

8.      Online Fitness

$100 billion fitness industry globally saw a standstill with COVID. But, the industry was quick to transform itself to an exercise from home model. As per the report, fitness applications like Lose Weight at Home, Cure.fit and Home Workout have seen a 39.50% increase in time spent with a 14.72% increase in engagement rate and 104.53% increase in daily active users.

9.      Virtual Reality

The habit to see and touch a product prior to purchase may no longer be considered safe or possible in some cases. While traditional industries are having to move online, the recent improvements in technology and reduction of deployment cost, the transition will be easier

10.      Telecommunication

Everything listed above will requirement one thing in common, DATA. Telecoms will try and acquire larger spectrum and upgrade to 5G quickly. Will this see the next boom in telecom?

There will be many more industries to add to this like industrial automation, micro financing, taxi hailing etc, but those are for some other time

I would add: white goods will get a boost, everyone will want a phone and laptop now, not to mention all the gaming consoles / roti makers / dishwashers / etc.
