Highlights From The Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI 2022 Report

The 5th edition of the Artificial Intelligence Index Report entitled Measuring Trends in Artificial Intelligence was released this week. The report, produced by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), is one of the most credible sources for data about AI worldwide. This year's report is 299 pages long and includes 173 visualizations. The report also includes an interactive visualization tool that can be used to compare 29 countries using 23 indicators.

To produce the AI Index, HAI partnered with academic, private, and nonprofit organizations incuding Google, OpenAI, Open Philanthropy, Bloomberg Government, LinkedIn, McKinsey & Company, Netbase Quid, Women in Machine Learning, Center for Security and Emerging Technology, Computing Research Association, and Emsi Burning Glass.

1. In 2021 private investment in AI in totaled $93.5 billion.

Dear Margaretta Colangelo , thank you for this summary. Unfortunately my country, Italy, does not appear in the rankings. Most Italian companies are small and medium-sized (micro-sized, compared to American companies) and therefore with little budgets available for investments in AI. However, my experience tells me that even in large Italian companies, the main problem is another. I would define it "Management digital skill gap", an insufficient level of knowledge of the top management of companies of the potentialities in improving the competitiveness of the business obtainable with the digitalization of processes and in particular with the use of AI. This is a great summary of the report, thanks for taking the time to do it and to select your top ten. Interesting when you look at the dynamic of investment 2020 - 2021 (fig 4.2.10 in the report) Ed Tech is the only one which has decreased. Also great to see investment in Wellness & Fitness nearly doubled 2020 - 2021.
