She used her knowledge of math and statistics to help demonstrate the impact that cleanliness could have on addressing mortality rates, specifically during the Crimean War in the 1850s. However, as a young woman, her parents were initially opposed to the idea of her even working in a hospital.

3. The annually celebrated National Nurses Week that we know today officially began in 1993. However, the first national recognition of professional nurses was during a single National Nurse Week in 1954, a proclamation made in observance of the 100-year anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s Crimean mission.
