10 Features of Good Internship
India is a country of youth, who dreams about getting a good job and a proper positioning in society. In order to achieve that they join professional degree courses such as Engineering and Management. Usually the curriculum followed in the professional courses are far from the real life / corporate / industrial needs and learning. Hence, the students look for internship in a company, ( Its a 2 months tenure in the mid of the course where students work / trained in a company and learn real life skill and business processes ).
But, due to large number of students and very less demand of interns in companies the competition here very high. Therefore its better to understand what are the essential points to make an internship opportunity as Dream Internship for a student.
1. Reputed Organization : The organization / company who are offering the internship must be reputed, means people should know about it. At-least on LinkedIn , Google and other web-space. The selection process for the interns should be fair and you should and must have a clear idea that what exactly the company's activities. This will help you to justify your internship work in any interview process.
2. Project Topic : The project or the department where you are suppose to intern should be of your interest and related to your coursework. Its should not just a random project / department of company's choice. Remember that an Electrical Engineering Student should not work for online marketing, its very hard to justify a horrible combinations in an interview and you end up losing your points.
3. Experienced Mentor : Mostly the internship is all about having an experienced and friendly mentor, who not make you aware of the current business processes but also train you from the basics and share his experiences in a friendly manner , so that you get the information and knowledge without being ashamed of asking lots of questions. Your mentor should be interactive also and can be contacted easily.
4. Project Title : It's always important to discuss with your mentor about what exactly is your role and contribution to their project / department. Is there a specific project title where you are supposed to work and if yes, then how to do extensive research on the project project title in order to justify the internship in interview.
5. Stipend : The internship is meant to be done for skill and knowledge enhancement but if there is traveling required from one city to another then its always better if the company is offering you stipend of about Rs. 10k - 15k per month. But you have to remember one thing that the stipend should not be the only deciding factor particularly in the case of online work from home internship.
6. Corporate Culture : Its better if the internship is done in a corporate office with actual desk and interaction with the colleagues, this will help you in understanding the corporate culture and skills. But, due to COVID and other issues its also advisable to stay at home and do the work-from-home / online based internship and try to learn the corporate culture with the team through online means.
7. Field Trip / Site Visit : If the organization arrange any field trip / site visit of any ongoing projects, especially for core engineering students from ME, EE, CE and Energy Engineering students. This type of visit will provide practical knowledge and a feel of field work.
8. Work-Life Balance : Every internship should have flexibility for the interns. Flexibility in terms of timings and location. The interns should and must have options for Work From Home in some days and the work timings should be flexible throughout the week. If the internship is very intense and hectic then the actual learning will be compromised.
9. Full Time Job Opportunity : The organization should and must consider the interns for a full time position after they finish their degree coursework. If absorbing all the interns is not possible for the company then they should help the interns in getting a good job by providing recommendation and placement trainings etc.
10. HR-Admin Support : Interns should and must get a proper HR-Admin support from the organization, which includes proper formal documentation (with sign, seal on letterhead) for Offer Letter, Certificate of Completion and Letter of Recommendation (if possible). Helping interns in providing feedback to college, proving recommendation on LinkedIn and help them in final internship report ( corporate standard) and other helpline.
Unfortunately, due to huge number of candidates and very few positions, it is very difficult to get selected in an internship which have all the above 10 features. Only 15-20 % of the candidates all over India got internship offers, rest 80% end up having no internship offer at all, which is very depressing and stressful. Those students found themselves incompetent to work in a real life scenarios and hence getting a job become very challenging for them.
