10 Email Subject Tricks to Increase Newsletter Open Rates
Your newsletter being opened or ignored is totally dependent on your email subject line.
To start with, here’s how the open rate is calculated:
Number of opens divided by Number of recipients X 100
Keep in mind that people receive hundreds of emails everyday and they do not open all of them. The best email marketers know that the email subject must stand out from all other emails and excite the reader.
This week I’ll be discussing some ways to craft email subject lines so more people open your newsletters. I’ll also share some email subject lines from my inbox.
1. Use Trends
Trending topics are always hot on a reader’s mind. News companies do this very well by making the title of their emails the hottest topics. You need to think how to relate Beyonce’s Grammy performance to your product or how your readers can cook like Saltbae. These are some examples
- How to make your business Recession Proof
- Buhari isn’t back from leave: How to Deal with erring employees
- 10 Tips for Saving money in a recession

2. Be Funny
This could be a little hard to do but is totally worth it. theSkimm has a history of absolutely hilarious email subjects.
3. Drop a Statistic
65% of Nigerian Businesses lost $1 Billion in 2016
I made that up for the purpose of this post. You need to use statistics to your advantage. Shock your readers with fact-based statistics and they will surely open your newsletter.
4. Personalise with the Subscriber’s Name
Personalisation is a great trick with Newsletters. The more personal an email is, the more likely the recipient opens them. You can personalise emails by adding the user’s name to the email subject or send them content based on what they’ve earlier consumed.
5. Use Emoji
Emojis are underrated for separating your email from the pack. They’re guaranteed to make your email standout. Don’t overuse them however.
6. A/B Testing
A/B testing is the term used to describe comparing two versions of something to see which works better. You can split your newsletter recipients into two, send them different email subjects and see what email has the higher open rate.
7. Ask Questions
Ask questions relating to problems your readers might be facing. Examples are:
- Do you want to grow your social media followers?
- Do you want the best deals on electronics?
- Have you seen this brilliant hack for reducing data usage?
8. Deliver Promises
Your users want you to promise them something. These are examples of promise-led subject lines:
- This Trick will Increase Your Customers by at least 30%
- How to Gain 100 New social Media Followers everyday
- We Guarantee These Are the Lowest Prices Ever
- Up to 70% off Everything In Store Right Now
9. Provide Scarcity and Promote Urgency
E-commerce sites do this best. By showing a product is scarce and will soon be unavailable, your reader is excited to check it out.
- These Deals Close at 12PM Today
- Only 10 iPhones left at N100,000
- Hurry, These clothes Are selling Fast
- There are only 5 Seats Left At our Growth Seminar
10. Share Knowledge
Sharing your knowledge with your readers about your industry or product is always a great email subject. Here are some samples:

After using these headlines to spike your reader’s interests, you must not under-deliver on your email subject. You should always provide whatever it is you have stated or you’ll see your open rates drop back to their low states.
