Last month I had the opportunity to attend a ‘Revenue -Operations’ meeting held in Holborn, London. The focus was :’Unleashing the Power of AI for Strategic Growth’. During the panel discussion an esteemed speaker brought up a very interesting discussion on 'Email Marketing' and how automation when done sloppily can actually harm your business rather than support it. So then should we avoid Email Marketing? I kept thinking about it during my ride back home. I could not fathom any digital marketing done today without the use of emails. It’s still a ‘Must Have’ strategy , its essential and relevant not only due to its ease, accessibility and economic viability, it’s a given in the 'Basic Marketing Tools Starter Pack' if you must bundle it in such a way.

Anyway, I did some research over the Easter weekend (Happy Easter for those who celebrate!) and decided to share some important insights. So, here I would like to share with you what I feel are a few important things to remember while forming your email marketing strategy. It will help avoid damaging your well thought out marketing strategy and you can create more effective and appreciated email campaigns that resonate with recipients and drive meaningful engagement and conversions.
?
1. Purchasing Email Lists: Avoid buying email lists as they often contain outdated or low-quality contacts who haven't opted in to receive emails from your organization. Sending unsolicited emails can damage your sender reputation and lead to high bounce rates and spam complaints.
?
2. Misleading Subject Lines: Avoid using deceptive or misleading subject lines to trick recipients into opening your emails. Not only does this erode trust with your audience, but it can also violate email marketing regulations and lead to negative consequences for your sender reputation.
?
3. Overly Aggressive Sales Pitches: Steer clear of overly aggressive or pushy sales pitches that may alienate recipients and lead to high unsubscribe rates or spam complaints. Focus on providing value and building relationships with your audience rather than hard-selling.
?
4. Ignoring Unsubscribe Requests: Always honour unsubscribe requests promptly and ensure that recipients have a clear and easy way to opt out of receiving future emails from your organization. Ignoring unsubscribe requests can damage your sender reputation and violate email marketing regulations.
?
5. Neglecting Email Segmentation: Avoid sending one-size-fits-all email blasts to your entire email list without segmenting recipients based on their interests, preferences, or engagement level. Tailoring your email content to specific segments can improve relevance and engagement.

6. Poor Email Design and Formatting: Stay away from cluttered or poorly designed emails that are difficult to read or navigate. Avoid sharp and confusing colours! Keep it simple! Use clean layouts, clear typography, and compelling visuals to enhance readability and user experience.
?
7. Ignoring Mobile Optimization: With a significant portion of email opens happening on mobile devices, it's crucial to ensure that your emails are mobile-responsive and optimized for viewing on smartphones and tablets. Neglecting mobile optimization can result in poor user experience and decreased engagement.
?
8. Sending Too Many Emails: Avoid bombarding recipients' inboxes with excessive emails, as this can lead to email fatigue and increase the likelihood of unsubscribes or spam complaints. Focus on quality over quantity and strive to maintain a consistent sending frequency that aligns with recipient expectations.
?
9. Failing to Test Emails: Neglecting to test different elements of your emails, such as subject lines, content, and design, can result in missed opportunities for optimization and improvement. Always conduct A/B tests to identify what resonates best with your audience and refine your email strategy accordingly.
?
10. Not Monitoring Email Metrics: Ignoring email engagement metrics such as open rates, click-through rates, and conversion rates can prevent you from gaining valuable insights into the effectiveness of your email campaigns. Regularly monitor and analyse email metrics to identify areas for improvement and optimize your email strategy.
?
By avoiding these common pitfalls, you can improve the effectiveness of your email marketing campaigns and maintain a positive relationship with your audience.
