10 Commandments of Recruiting: Law 2

Law one of 10 commandments of recruiting was to create very attractive job descriptions. Law two is to ask high level questions.

Asking high level questions to hiring managers and candidates is critical. You can see examples of high level questions below.? Good questions position you as an expert versus a rookie, allow you to get all the information you need in less questions, and give you more insight into deep motives that hiring managers and candidates have so that you have a better chance at filling the positions.?

Here are 6 questions to ask hiring managers and five questions to ask candidates . Make sure that you are always repeating back to them what you hear — listen, repeat and validate!

6 discovery questions to ask hiring managers :

  1. What’s the main reason the position is open??
  2. If you can picture your ideal candidate, what would they look like and what would they have in their background and personality??
  3. For this person to hit the ground running, what MUST they have in their background right now before you interview anyone??
  4. Let’s say you hire a new ____from us. Imagine a year from now you are walking down the hall with him/her and you FEEL they have done a FABULOUS job for you. What EXACTLY did they accomplish for you in that first year?
  5. What’s not happening right now as a result of the opening and who’s doing it??? What are the ramifications of this position being open in 3 months??
  6. What are the 1-2 things about your group and your group’s culture that really make you guys stand out that would entice someone to leave their job and come work for you????
  7. ?What kind of salary range were you thinking for a person with this profile??

5 questions to ask candidates:

  1. If you could hand carve your ideal position, what would that look like?
  2. What was the most appealing thing on the job description that made you apply??
  3. Since no job is perfect, if you could change 1-2 things about your current position, what would they be?
  4. What’s the main reason you are looking for a position right now?
  5. Where do you need to be in salary to make it worth your while to make a change?
