Calling all Swifties! ...Fans of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, that is. With instruments to see the universe in gamma-ray, X-ray, ultraviolet, and visible light, Swift launched on this day 20 years ago to study gamma-ray bursts and their afterglows. Happy #Swift20! https://lnkd.in/enQjmhjd

Welcome to the largest community of scientists, engineers and technologists on planet Earth. ??????
关于我们
NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center is a major U.S. laboratory for developing and operating unmanned scientific spacecraft. The center manages many of NASA's Earth observation, astronomy, planetary science and astrophysics missions. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, is home to the nation's largest organization of scientists, engineers and technologists who build spacecraft, instruments and new technology to study Earth, the sun, our solar system and the universe. Just outside Washington, Goddard is home to Hubble operations and the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope. Goddard manages communications between mission control and orbiting astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Goddard scientists stare into the sun, grind up meteorites for signs of life's building blocks, look into the farthest reaches of space, and untangle the mysteries of our own changing world. Goddard engineers construct sensitive instruments, build telescopes that peer into the cosmos, and operate the test chambers that ensure those satellites' survival. Named for American rocketry pioneer Dr. Robert H. Goddard, the center was established May 1, 1959, as NASA's first space flight complex. Goddard and its several installations are critical in carrying out NASA's missions of space exploration and scientific discovery. Goddard encompasses several other NASA properties, most significantly: ? Wallops Flight Facility near Chincoteague, Virginia ? Katherine Johnson Independent Verification and Validation Facility in Fairmont, West Virginia ? Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York City ? White Sands Complex outside Las Cruces, New Mexico ? Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine, Texas

This fall, our Wallops and Goddard visitor centers planted Moon Trees. When these Loblolly Pine trees were seedlings, they flew aboard the #Artemis I Orion spacecraft around the Moon and back, between Nov. 16 to Dec. 11, 2022. Adult Moon Trees, grown from seedlings that flew aboard Apollo 14 to lunar orbit in 1971, can be found planted around the country, including a Sycamore at our Goddard visitor center. Goddard scientists, including Dr. Noah Petro and Dr. Barbara Cohen, are leading lunar science, training astronauts in geology, and preparing to analyze samples from the Moon’s South Pole region through NASA’s upcoming Artemis II, III, and IV missions. Visit our visitor center pages and learn more about the programs they offer. Goddard: https://lnkd.in/eYj_pv3P Wallops: https://lnkd.in/eAbKu3zN

Feel the spark with our Fall 2024 issue of Spark Magazine! Explore 20 years of Core Flight Software and its role in making NASA missions possible. The issue takes a closer look at how software infrastructures allow NASA science to tackle some of today’s biggest challenges. By constantly innovating, we’ve made it possible for an active community of users comprised — not just aerospace professionals, but educators, policy makers, students, and citizens — to help improve the tools we use to explore and learn about our world and beyond. https://lnkd.in/g8cQ8gvP

"We are excited to look at the possibility of once again launching sounding rockets from Peru,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. NASA and Peru’s National Commission for Aerospace Research and Development (CONIDA) laid the groundwork for a potential multi-year scientific rocket launch campaign. Both countries signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding on Nov. 14 that includes safety training, a joint feasibility study for the potential campaign, and technical assistance for CONIDA on sounding rocket launches. The last time NASA conducted sounding rocket campaigns at CONIDA’s Punta Lobos launch base was in 1975 and 1983. https://lnkd.in/e4XWJRKZ

Art ?? Astronomy Senior multimedia producer Scott Wiessinger works at that juncture, helping people understand science concepts through video, art installations, concerts, graphics, and more. Learn more about Scott: https://lnkd.in/eBkWGb3X Check out some of his work! ?? Cosmic Cycles: "This project was a real joy to work on. I created the Sun and Echoes of the Big Bang movements. The combination of music and image to create something greater than the sum of their parts is one of my passions." Watch the series: https://lnkd.in/eEzD7pQR NASA's Roman Space Telescope: Systems, Assemble!: "Covering Roman’s progress has been an honor. I’ve really enjoyed collaborating with my co-producer Sophia Roberts to get great shots of each step. Filming the centrifuge was my dream for 15 years."
