Are you a beginner in English? Want to improve your vocabulary and communicate better in English? This is a short list of 10 books you can read.
Why I Recommend These 10 Books For Beginners In English:
- Conversational English has been used in all of them. The kind you will be using in your daily situations.
- You will get good strategies to remember grammar and usage of English when you speak and write.
- I have recommended a mix of British, Indian and American books so you can understand various usages of English.
- It is a mix of fiction, non-fiction and grammar books.
- Most of these books can be found in the audiobook (Audible) version - if you listen and read along, you will improve your vocab faster.
- You can find most of these books in a lending library near you (incase you can't buy them rightaway).
So here goes the list -
1.Animal Farm - George Orwell
This is a super short novella - it's the story of a group of farm animals. They rebel against their human farmer in the hope of creating a society where all animals can be equal, free, and happy.
2. Eats, Shoots and Leaves Paperback – by Lynne Truss
A super funny book that teaches you the ins and out of correct English pronunciation.
3. Have You Eaten Grandma?- by Gyles Brandreth
English grammar and punctuation usage can be confusing. Gyles' book is a fun guide to understanding grammar rules and using proper punctuation.
4. The Room On The Roof - Ruskin Bond
Ruskin Bond is one of my favourite writers and I recommend any book of his for beginners in English. You can start with this book - It revolves around Rusty, an orphaned seventeen-year-old Anglo-Indian boy living in Dehradun.
5. Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone - J.K.Rowling
Recommend the first book of the Harry Potter series because it is an easy read for beginners and the vocabulary used in conversations is delightful. I highly recommend watching the movie as well - it will make the scenes in the book come alive!
6.The Old Man And The Sea - Ernest Hemingway
An inspiring yet tragic story of an old lonely Cuban fisherman in the Gulf Stream and the giant Marlin he kills and loses. Another book in the genre of 'Moby Dick' by Herman Melville.
7. Ignited Minds - Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam
In this book, Dr. Kalam shares his vision for India - he shares how students and youth in India have the power, intelligence and diligence to aspire to greatness and create a good life for themselves and guide their country to greatness.
8. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon
This is a murder mystery novel with the hero, Christopher Boone, a fifteen year old with Asperger's, a form of autism. He knows a very great deal about maths and very little about human beings. He loves lists, patterns and the truth. He investigate the murder of a neighbour's dog with his unique talents.
9. Tuesdays With Morrie - Mitch Albom
A book about life, death and how to live better. This is a memoir by Mitch Albom about a series of visits he made to his former sociology professor Morrie Schwartz, as Schwartz gradually dies of ALS. He coaches Mitch in the meaning of life.
10. Wonder - R.J.Palacio
This is a story of a ten-year-old boy named August Pullman. He had multiple surgeries to correct his facial deformity so he was homeschooled. It has been made into a heartwarming movie as well.
