For me, a key reflection point will be the first time that there appears to be tension or even a sense of different desired directions. Founders that have a bias towards action, like chewing glass (solving hard problems), and can pitch their vision as a story into how it will define a category get me excited. As an investor, you should be ready to be the co-pilot on a plane that is being built as you fly it. If you have a weak stomach, a fear of turbulence, or a problem putting someone else's oxygen mask on first (high ego) then VC might not be the right career path. If you like digging into the details of the business, wearing a parachute on your back at all times, and can offer founders non-obvious strategies or suggestions then you might have a spot on waiting for you on The Midas List.

I've learned that it's about being where they are, not where you want them to be. Events for networking? Please don't think that real bonds happen at a fancy gala when you're both grabbing the last canapé. Also, please don't have those planned meetings where you "express needs and challenges." Be brave, be brash, and show them an idea that's so compelling that they forget they're mentoring and start to think about how to invest. Remember that in today's busy world, it's not about fitting in with your mentor's schedule or way of talking to people. Making them think that not investing in you is the biggest mistake they'll ever make is what your disruptive vision is all about. Now, go out there and make those VCist chase you like you're good!
