The 10 AI Sins: How to Write Like a Robot

The 10 AI Sins: How to Write Like a Robot

1. Talk like a thesaurus at a business conference. Leverage synergistic solutions to drive stakeholder value.

2. Keep everything vague and abstract. Replace "500 attendees from 50 companies" with "many industry professionals."

3. Start everything with "In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape..."

4. Use formula transitions: "It's not just about security, it's about transformation."

5. Write passively about abstract concepts. "Digital transformation was undertaken."

6. Ramble endlessly about obvious points. Use 100 words where 10 would do.

7. Start every section with "Additionally" and promise to "empower your journey."

8. Preview everything: "In this post, I'll explain 5 ways to optimize your strategy."

9. Load up on metaphors: "Navigate the stormy seas of digital disruption on your journey."

10. Title everything "From Chaos to Clarity: A Leader's Journey to Excellence"

That was fun!

Oh... are you worried that your posts sound like this? Or your last blog?

Believe me - it's not just you.

We've been promised that AI will do SO MUCH for you. So we are experimenting.

We're getting time back.

We're finally getting that content out there!

But there's a problem.

It sucks.

AI has turned your sharp insights into yesterday's oatmeal.

If it sounds like AI? There will be negative trust and rapport with your readers. They’ll skip next time, because there isn’t value like there was before your writing was assimilated by the Borg

So what do you do?

Here are five ways to do better:

From the Top 10 Content Creation Directives I give AI:

  1. If I wouldn't say it in Starbucks, don't say it in my thought leadership. Human speak only.
  2. Write short, concise, spicy sentences using my actual words from this transcript and these examples of my writing.
  3. Never take specifics and make them abstract examples. Sticky, memorable details are crucial for an audience to remember insights. Not "connect with stakeholders" but "meet with IT leaders every Tuesday"
  4. Cut 'it's not just ____, it's _____' and rhetorical transitions
  5. Replace passive voice and abstract nouns with active verbs - not "measurements were taken" but "we measured X and Y", not "implement solutions" but "fixing bugs"

Jargon everywhere! Some writers using AI tools seem to think people won’t notice—but on this platform, it’s easy to spot, especially when content is just copied and pasted. Sure, use AI to polish grammar, spelling, and the like, but don’t let a robot create your content for you.

Great post ... wouldn't resonate if it weren't true! I've seen junior writers taking the same approach - I call it "word salad."
