Zooming In

A deep-dive into one big theme or news story every week.?

There’s no denying that artificial intelligence is having a moment.

But while Dall-E and ChatGPT have captured the public consciousness, they’re hardly the only ones tapping into the technology.

A slew of other lesser-known AI-based tools can help you with everything from programming to identifying and transcribing key sections in calls.?

“I call this moment the Cambrian explosion of AI applications,” said Insight Partners ’ managing director George Mathew , referring to the explosion of AI-powered applications happening at the moment.

Here are a few on our radar, in alphabetical order:

CommonSim-1

CommonSim-1 uses generative AI to produce 3D models and videos from a single image or description in text. The technology was developed by Common Sense Machines , a company spun out of an MIT professor’s lab, and accurately models the world for enterprise use cases, said Rudina Seseri , founder and managing partner of AI-focused VC firm Glasswing Ventures .

CoPilot

CoPilot is based on technology built by OpenAI – the same lab behind ChatGPT and Dall-E – and was rolled out by Microsoft and GitHub last summer. The AI-powered programmer is aimed at professional coders, and essentially spits out lines of computer code, making the process faster. An enterprise-version of the tool called GitHub Copilot for Business was rolled out in December 2022.

“The adoption has been astonishing,” said Glasswing’s Seseri. “It was made generally available in June 2022 and added 400,000 subscribers in one month.”

Deepdub

The Tel Aviv-based startup was recommended by Insight Partners’ Mathew, and uses AI to automate the process of dubbing audio and video to make it less manual, producing results in weeks as opposed to months. It’s closed $20 million in Series A funding so far.

Descript

The San Francisco-based startup was recommended by independent investor Allie K. Miller , and simplifies audio and video editing – and is used by my colleagues and I at LinkedIn too. The desktop app is cloud-based and works on both Windows and Mac, and recently raised $50 million in a Series C round led by the OpenAI Startup Fund.

EmailTriager

Developers are starting to build a cottage industry of apps using OpenAI, pointed out Mathew, and EmailTriager is one of them built on top of ChatGPT. It’s an email assistant that can automatically craft email replies and place the drafts in your inbox.

Grain

The Tiger Global Management -backed app is geared at enabling sales teams to close more deals by helping them record, transcribe and identify key moments from video calls. It recently completed its first acquisition of the work collaboration software PingPong as well.?

HyperWrite (OthersideAI) ?

Another recommendation by Miller, the web-based plug-in uses AI to pick up on your writing style and give more accurate autocomplete suggestions. It comes in three different price tiers and can be used across blogs, emails and marketing copy – and even has templates.

Mem

While there’s no dearth of note-taking and organizing apps out there, Mem has managed to stand out with its AI-powered software that can parse through different notes, summarize them, and format them too. It’s raised $29 million to date, backed by a who’s who of investors including Andreessen Horowitz , Harry Stebbings and OpenAI’s Startup Fund.

Otter.ai ?

One of the more established transcription players out there, the Mountain View-based company uses AI to convert speech to text by integrating its software with meeting apps like Zoom and Google Meet. It last raised $50 million in funding in a Series B round nearly two years ago by investors including Spectrum Equity , Horizons Ventures , Draper Associates and Notable Capital .

Scribe ?

How many times do you wish there was an easier way to record your computer screen to break down a process? Scribe's software allows people to do just that – generating a step-by-step written guide of a process on their screens to make it easily shareable with others. The startup’s CEO Jennifer Smith shared that it launched one new feature a week on average in 2022, and it has the backing of big-name investors like Tiger Global.

Solid list, Tanya Dua! I'm putting Writer on your radar: it's an AI writing platform for teams. But unlike other GPT-powered applications, Writer's training happens on YOUR data — your best-performing blog posts, landing pages, ppc ads, email, and LinkedIn and Twitter social — and YOUR style guide. Writer is enterprise-grade with all of the security and data privacy features you'll need for organization-wide rollouts. Writer is deployed widely at leading companies like UnitedHealthcare, Accenture, Intuit, Twitter, UiPath, HubSpot, Spotify, and Deloitte.

As most have discovered, AI is a disruptive technology, but it is still just a tool. The key then, like with any tool (e.g. a computer), is to learn how to use it effectively in our work. The faster we become proficient, the better.

Really interesting list, Chat-GPT also posted their top tools today too and I’ve been using a platform called https://www.futurepedia.io/ to follow new entrants. Wondered if you also considered adding Midjourney? Similar to Dall-E just feels a lot more creative
