Let's get real. How many emails do you receive in in your inbox everyday that you either send to trash, spam or just ignore?
Most entrepreneurs collect email addresses so they can spam their list with emails in the hope that at some point they will be able to sell them something.
The problem is that if you don't engage with the people who are at the other end of the email address you have no idea if they even care about the stuff you send them.
I hear people talk about how many email subscribers they have. So what? The real question is how many of those subscribers actually care about what you have to say? How many of them would respond to you if you sent them an email like the one I sent below?
(Here is an email I sent out to everyone who subscribed to my emails ...)

Hi (so and so),
I'm a big believer in quality over quantity. There are a lot of people that boast about how many subscribers they have in their email list. BIG deal!
Having a list of inactive, uninterested, unresponsive emails is vanity and worthless.
I don't want a 'list' of emails. I want to connect to people who actually look forward to my emails and genuinely benefit from what I have to share.
If you're not one of those people then please unsubscribe now. Just click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of this email.
If you do enjoy what I have been sharing so far then please let me know. I want to hear from you. Just send me a quick "Hello" so I know you're there and not just letting my emails sit and rot in your inbox.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Daniel

The number of responses is the REAL number of subscribers you have. Because ultimately that is the audience you want to be talking to. The people who actually look forward to what you have to offer.
Don't fool yourself with big numbers.
Nobody would care if I said I had a million toe nail clippings
(unless you were a real sicko and like that kind of thing)
Don't be afraid to ask your subscribers to respond. It may be a scary exercise (after all, what if nobody responds?) but at least you know where you stand and you can make necessary changes.
Maybe your content sucks. Maybe you are targeting the wrong people (your sending emails about technology to 80 year old women) etc
Your time is precious so don't waste it by talking to the walls.
Let me know how you get on.
Daniel
