The Impact of Survivorship Bias on Company Culture ??

Survivorship bias is a cognitive bias that occurs when we focus only on the individuals or things that have "survived" a process, while overlooking those that did not make it or were eliminated along the way. This bias can sneak into various aspects of life, including the business world.

In the context of a company's culture, survivorship bias can have significant implications. Imagine a successful company with a vibrant and thriving culture. It's natural to analyze the characteristics and practices of this successful organization to learn from their achievements. However, this analysis might miss vital insights if it doesn't account for the companies that failed or struggled despite adopting similar strategies.

So, how can companies avoid falling into the trap of survivorship bias?

?? Encourage Open Dialogue: Promote a culture where both successes and failures are openly discussed and valued. Emphasize the learning opportunities inherent in setbacks.

?? Analyze Failures Too: Make a conscious effort to analyze the factors contributing to failures and learn from them to build a more robust and resilient organization.

?? Diverse Perspectives: Seek diverse perspectives and input to ensure a more comprehensive understanding of challenges and potential solutions.

?? Celebrate Progress, Not Just Success: Acknowledge the effort and progress made by teams, even if the outcomes are not yet at the desired level.

"+ One strike and out: For people who are merely LinkedIn connections and nothing else. Do they post irrelevancies, 'like' posts that squat on your timeline, distract you? Unfollow with extreme prejudice."
