1 Tip on How to Know When to Say "No" as a Business Owner

As independent insurance adjusters we are business owners and entrepreneurs, we are driven individuals.

We push hard, say yes, and because of that hard work and determination, we often find financial success.

But how do you know when to say "no"? When is enough, enough?

3 Levels of Success

First, let's establish something. To me, there are 3 different levels of success.

  1. Surviving
  2. Thriving
  3. Multiplying

We'll talk about the first two levels here, the top level, multiplying is where you start to help reproduce thriving in other people's lives.

Our pursue everything at all costs is driven by our need for survival.

Our ancestors chased woolly mammoths and threw spears out of them, not out of a sense of thriving, but because that is how their tribe would survive.

I qualify surviving to the people I mentor in a very simplistic and privileged first world manner that I learned from Dave Ramsey years ago.

Surviving = Ramen Noodle Survivability

If you and your family have a roof over your head, clothes on your back, and ramen noodles in your cupboards, you are surviving.

The only way we survive is by saying "Yes!" to that crummy job, say "Yes!" to your first client, say "Yes!" to starting a business, etc.

But how do we thrive?

Thriving = beyond "not dying", and living a life that is full, rounded, and enjoyable.

You say "Yes to survive". We've established that, but you say "No" to thrive.

Don't believe me?

Want a thriving marriage, say "no" to hanging out with the guys at the bar.

Want a relationship with your kids that is thriving? You say "No" to watching the game and instead spending time with your kids.

Want to have thriving relationships with your customers? Say "No" to the crummy customers and "Yes" to your dream customers.

Why is this? Why is saying no the key to having a thriving life?

Because the less there is of something, the more valuable it becomes.

The less you give the rest of the world access to YOU, the more valuable your time is with those you say yes to.

The more valuable the work you do becomes, because its rare, exclusive, and sought after.

It's putting the law of supply and demand in our favor.

The 1 Tip for Learning When to Say No as a Business Owner ---

If you are looking to thrive in your life, you must learn to stop saying yes all the time in your life and learn when to say no.

How do you know when to say no?

When you've reached surviving (ramen noodles) it's time to say "no" to anything but the best opportunities and aspects of your life that you cherish.

If you are always saying yes, always busy, and always booked, you are likely going to miss the best business opportunities in your life and your going to miss the most important moments of your life.

Say yes to survive, say no to thrive.
