The 1 thing we avoid
Tech Leaders
Helping technical experts scale their impact and income as business leaders
Here’s what’s in today’s edition of The Technical Leader:
__________________________________________________________________________
We all have work that we don’t look forward to doing.
Tasks for a project that are essential but are our least favorite to do.
It’s common for us to procrastinate and focus on the tasks that we’re good at and that we enjoy doing.
The trouble is — the tasks that we don’t like to do, will limit our results.
By avoiding that one task that has to be done, a domino effect of ‘blockers’ will make all the other work you’ve just done irrelevant.
Think about washing your car at home.
You wait for a sunny day, gather all the cleaning supplies, back your car out of the garage, and hook up the garden hose.
But you don’t actually turn on the water.
All the dominos you’ve carefully set up fall down and you aren’t able to get the results you want: a clean car.
This is a trivial example, but people do this in their work all the time.
So what is it about that one task that you dread doing?
Do you feel like you’re not good at it?
Perhaps you need more training so you feel more confident doing it.
Is it a boring task and it doesn’t get you excited?
Maybe you can delegate it to someone earlier in their career who would find it exciting.
