The #1 thing Digital Agencies get WRONG when trying to 2X their revenue

Nearly every digital agency I've worked with comes to me hungry to grow their agency.


Many have already set a bold goal to double (or even triple) their revenue in a year or less.


However, one common problem I see among these digital agencies isn't their high level of ambition; they forget to run the math on their goal first.


In their passionate pursuit of multiplying their revenue, they needed to see that they would need to add so many clients to reach that revenue mark that they (and their team) would probably implode!


But the real problem isn't ambition or math; it's the scalability of their business model.


So why does scalability matter if you want to multiply your agency's revenue?


If the only way to multiply your revenue is to increase your clients, you'll need to hire more people to service those clients sooner or later.


If you hire more people, your expenses will increase (which will lower your profit margin) and will likely add more stress to your life trying to manage them.


I have yet to meet an agency owner who said something like this…

Several years ago, this vicious cycle of "grow, hire, stress" really started to get to me, and I began to think, "There's got to be a better way."


What if there was a way you could multiply your revenue without adding team members or complexity?


Then, I stumbled upon a business model that fractional CMOs and CFOs have used for years.


It is a hybrid of a traditional flat fee retainer and a Pay-for-Performance model (for example, you get paid 5% of total sales).


I call it a Performance Retainer.


Both traditional flat fee retainers and Pay-for-Performance models have pros and cons, but a hybrid of the two can maximize the pros and minimize the cons of each.


If your agency gets solid results for your clients, it's a super option for promising brands that might not be able to pay your flat fee retainer prices now but could grow into great clients with your agency's help.


It also works exceptionally well during market disruption, such as economic downturns, recessions, and even pandemics (let's not have another one of those).


Put yourself in your prospect's shoes. This approach dramatically limits the perceived risk of working with your agency and makes it easy for brands to get started during challenging economic cycles.


However, achieving results also allows your agency to grow its revenue significantly without necessarily adding additional clients or team members.


It's definitely a revenue multiplier!
