1 Sugar Or Two?
When I was in college, I worked at a donut shop during the evenings and weekends. After a number of weeks serving people their daily coffee, you get to know them. Their names, if they have kids, whether they want one sugar or two, a little milk or perhaps cream instead?
Although I didn't know it at the time, this was about building relationships. When customers came in, I had their coffee ready to go before they entered the building. The smiles (and tips) I received was what made it all worth while. I simply approached things as if they tables were turned.
How would I like to be treated?
It may not seem like a big deal, and it wasn't anything that I tried to do for any specific reason other than trying to make their day, but when I look back, it's the same attitude I apply to my business today.
People appreciate service. Businesses appreciate integrity, honesty and putting their interests front and center. It's about respect and doing what's right.
If you're in business for yourself, the obvious end game is to make money. Even still, how you go about generating that revenue shouldn't be at the expense of another. Your job is to get that smile. To help people. Showing them that you care. That you paid attention. That you have the skills to do the job. That you communicate and offer real solutions.
When going through your day to day, remember why you're doing what your doing and how your actions, products and services benefit the very people you're attempting to serve.
Transparency, kindness along with a focus to truly help others and make them happy should be your top priority. Do this and the money will come. (The tips I received at the donut shop are a testament to that).
People are people. Treat them well and they will do the same.
