The #1 reason why people cannot lose weight and improve their health.

The #1 reason why people cannot lose weight and improve their health.

When people come to me for help, and particularly those who want to go to the retreats we run, it’s clear straight away that they have tried so many different ways and methods to get results.

And most are under the illusion that they just haven’t found the right approach, diet or workout plan that will deliver them the results they so desperately need.

When I tell them that their issue has nothing to do with exercise or diet, they’re shocked. Now, this isn’t to say that diet and nutrition aren’t important.

Both need to be addressed for any lasting change to occur. But when you see folk bouncing from one diet and training plan to the next, it is clear that there are deeper issues than calories, kale, push-ups and squats.

People will only allow themselves to progress as far as their self-image will enable them. We often see people lose a lot of weight, then pile it back on.

And it’s common to see people follow a new way of eating, only to end up bingeing furiously weeks later.

These events have very little to do with motivation and inspiration. And it’s not about people not wanting it enough either! Of course, people want to look and feel better, who wouldn’t want that?

The issue is that if someone has a self-image that is ‘fat’, ‘lazy’, ‘not good enough’, ‘unworthy’, or any other ‘low energy’ image going on, it doesn’t matter how hard they try.

They will always end up right back where they started. Often at times, even worse than before they wanted to make changes.

Everyone has a default self-image that they believe to be true about them. I have had to do some deep work on transforming mine over the years as I regularly fell victim to self-sabotage and falling off track.

Gay Hedrick’s in his book ‘The Big Leap’, calls this an upper limit problem. In the case of body weight, health and fitness, this is the amount of weight loss or health you can allow yourself to come into your life.

It’s common to see people get stuck at a certain weight or clothing size, then wonder why self-sabotage and old habits creep back in to ruin their progress.

This is an upper limit problem that always comes back to some past trauma or some limiting beliefs that you hold about yourself.

The good thing is, you can change these beliefs. And you can improve your self-image.

It takes some work and a little bit of time. But it can change your life. A good book on changing the self-image is Psycho-Cybernetics by Dr.Maxwell Maltz. The book I mentioned before, ‘The Big Leap’ is a book worthy of your time too.

So if you have been on the dieting merry go round for some years and are feeling deflated, you’re not alone! I can assure you that you can end all of the self-sabotage relatively quickly, allowing you to breakthrough health and weight loss plateaus.

Before you start the next shiny new diet or workout plan, check yourself. It’s not the diet or exercise that’s the issue if you’ve been struggling for a while.

And you’re not lazy, de-motivated or un-inspired. You’re just true to what you believe is capable for you and your body.
