The #1 reason AI strategies backfire (and how to fix it)

I’ve been speaking with agencies, brands, and startups of all sizes about their AI strategies. One common, glaring issue? They don’t talk to their people about it because 'they are already freaked out' or some variety of that.

Leadership might ask for input during planning, but when the strategy rolls out, there’s no all-hands, no transparency, no reassurance. No "Here's why this matters, and here’s how it impacts you." The result? Confusion, resistance, and in some cases, people jumping ship—costing companies money, momentum, and trust. Go one step further and have a pre-all hands and bring people on board, make them your helpers.

How to avoid the "AI void"

Instead of keeping AI decisions behind closed doors, make it a big deal. Address concerns head-on. Create clarity, not fear. The companies that succeed with AI follow these key principles:

? Speak in one voice – If leadership isn’t aligned, align first. No vague, half-baked messaging. Be upfront about what’s easy, what’s hard, and what’s unknown.

? Set real KPIs – Tie AI goals to actual business objectives. No vanity metrics, no detached innovation theatre.

? Be crystal clear on the ‘why’ – AI should drive impact, not just cut costs. If people think it's just about layoffs, they’ll resist. Frame it around growth, opportunity, and competitive advantage. Build them up and belay fears they're out the door as soon as possible (or what I call 'The Amazon robot staring you in the face scenario')

Hiding AI closed doors breeds uncertainty and fear. Open dialogue builds trust, alignment, and gives you a much greater chance of success.

Ask yourself this: Is this setting up the team up to win—or allow them to panic?
