Back in August of 2020, I was a guest expert on the Create Your Own Life Show by Jeremy Ryan Slate and he asked me one of the top questions new business owners struggle with when they start hiring.
In a nutshell, he asked me "Within legal bounds... what can I ask people [in the interview]?"
Here's what I had to say (right from the show)...
"The best interview for me, number one is one that's very organic. Because if it's organic, then guess what? You're going to see more of who that person really is.
There's a lot of stress that comes into coming into an interview and, people are preparing and, you know, a little bit of everything else. And so they're thinking about, okay, what do I need to say? What's the right thing to say. And you know, a lot of times you have the person asking the questions and they're so rigid.
And so you really don't find out who that person is, but if you just make an organic conversation and you really start to get that person comfortable, you will find out so much about the person.
So more than anything else during that interview process, it's about listening.
I've seen people go into the interview process, sharing too much information either about the company in the very beginning or doing too much talking themselves where they don't really find out about this individual.
And so if you really just, you know, you ask certain questions and you listen. And so I literally have like a set of questions that regardless of what the interview is, I always ask the person. And so one of the questions and it really gets the defenses down for people and they really start to, you can see them coming to their own is like, tell me something that you're really proud of.

It could be professional, it could be personal, but tell me something that you're really proud of, an accomplishment in your life. Man. Oh man, you really get to see that person shine because now that's something that they're really proud of. So they're going to feel comfortable telling you that they're going to tell you why that's important to them.
And so you really start to find out about that person. And so during the interview process, I'm trying to find out, cause it's kind of like, kind of like dating. Don't give everything on the first date in terms of information, you know, you go in there and you put that facade u[ almost and you give them a certain part of you, but you don't let them see everything.
And so interviewing is very much the same way.
They're not going to give you everything in the very beginning. And so your job is to make it an organic conversation as comfortable as possible.
So now that person is going to be more of who they are and that will, you'll see more of what you'll be getting.
If they want to start working with you.?"
