1 Powerful Tip For When You Get In Your Own Way

1 Powerful Tip For When You Get In Your Own Way

This weekend I was in London with a group of 25 business owners and professionals diving deep into what we wanted our lives to be like and how to get there.

We all felt the same - life doesn’t go to plan and it is surprising and annoying how frequently the reason for that is us.

I found myself saying this and I’m quite proud of how succinctly it sums life up:

I was born awesome and I’ve got in my own way ever since

It’s easy to have a downer on you and berate yourself for all the mistakes, inaction, wasted time and things said that should not have been said.? My one powerful tip in these times is this:

Give yourself grace.? Give yourself kindness, courtesy, clemency.? The verb to give grace means to confer dignity or honor.

In other words, cut yourself some slack.

You didn’t mean the mistake, you didn’t do it deliberately, it wasn’t an intentional evil plan.? Give yourself grace, forgive yourself.? Let it go.? Within even the most professional, accomplished and together person, there is a child upset at having made the mistake.? Give him or her a hug, speak gently to them like you would your own children and tell them it’s alright.

Alongside Grace, Treat it As Data

Alongside giving grace, take the personal out of things.? Shift from “I made this mistake” to “oh, that wasn’t a great thing to do”.? The data is that it didn't work well.? Okay, what would have been better, so next time I can do things better.

And this isn’t a woo-woo trick, it’s a better way to human.

An Action to Take Now

? Notice when you get in your own way, make a mistake, get it wrong.

? Treat it as data - hmm, that’s interesting, what’s the objective truth here?

? Give yourself grace - you probably didn’t intend the outcome that occurred.

? Let it go, move on.

And while you’re at it, consider surrounding yourself who a) also believe that you can give yourself grace and b) give themselves grace too.? Which like this ??is probably not the usual people you’ll come across at the water cooler in the office!

If you want to find a community like this, I have in-person version now and I’m launching an online community in March, so let me know and I’ll add you to the waitlist.
