The second factor: couture. Aloof, surreal, out of this world and therefore exactly what a fashion industry that is far too dominated by Excel lists needs. Each of these Schiaparelli happenings is a catwalk-turned-reminder that our industry needs to live its dreams. The retail analogue is the newly opened Dover Street Market branch in the heart of the Marais. A museum of the eclectic unsaleables of our industry, but a magnet for all those who spend two hours in front of the mirror in the morning to create the most artful outfit possible. This is what you can take home with you from Paris: a rejection of this "looks okay" understanding of fashion. Yes, it looks okay, but is that all we're competing for?
