Last week I wrote about self-doubt. If you didn’t catch it, please take a moment to read it! Many of you sent inbox messages sharing how it helped, and I appreciate the words of thanks.
This week, I want to step it up and teach you an effective tool that I’ve been using since age 17.
This one tool has helped me overcome every doubt placed in my path.
It has helped me to smash barriers, embrace resilience, not listen to nay-sayers (I have had plenty), and achieve every goal that I set out for myself.
Let’s face it: as a 49-year-old single mom of sons, speaker, TEDx, author, adventurer, and wilderness guide, it’s pretty obvious that I’d rather live outside the norms than in!?
In fact, I’ve now found myself setting huge personal and professional goals just for the fun of trying. That speaks for itself. This tool works.
But first, let’s back up. I’d like to share the moment I started using this tool. This is important.
If you don’t know my backstory and how I got here, you can find it written in my book, Walk Through This: Harness the Healing Power of Nature and Travel the Road to Forgiveness.
To highlight, I was 17 years old, pregnant, and enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a major in Art Education.
My goal was to finish my 5-year program in 4 years, offsetting expenses as a waitress and hostess.
Remember the days when you went to the admissions office and signed up for your classes? That was me.
A small-town girl at a big university, I was scared, nervous, not knowing anyone, with a belly showing.
I stood in front of the woman at the desk, and she glanced down at my stomach. She said, “Perhaps you should take some time off or not take so many credits.”?
I was so hurt.
Her judgment flipped a switch in me.
Politely, I replied, “No, thank you. I’ve got this.”?
A flame was lit as I walked away with my class schedule in hand.?
No one was going to hold me back from pursuing my desires.?
When your dreams, goals, and aspirations are questioned, use this #1 most effective tool.
Tell yourself this statement... Ask yourself this question...
Someone has to do it. It may as well be me. Because if I don’t, someone else will. And how will I feel when I see someone else celebrating what could have been mine?
When people questioned why I wanted to be an art teacher instead of a classroom teacher, when my odds were stacked against me, I used that tool.
When I took my kids on a 6-week road trip to visit 9 national parks and people questioned my sanity and ability as a mom, I used that tool.
When I left my marriage and sold my home and 95% of our material items, I used that tool.
When I started my business at 42 years old and didn’t know what I was doing, I used that tool.
When I put myself out there and created my profile on LinkedIn from a hotel lobby with a glass of wine, I used that tool.
When I landed the TEDx talk, I used that tool.
When I found my literary agent and publisher, I used that tool.
When we filmed the documentary in the Grand Canyon, I used that tool.
When I became a wilderness guide and pursued my dream of leading retreats in the Grand Canyon and Alaska, I used that tool.

When any pivot happens in my life, as it is right now while I step more into my role as a speaker, I use that tool.
I’ve taught it to my sons.
I’ve shared it with my family and friends.
I teach it to my clients.
Someone has to do it. It may as well be YOU.
We returned from a Grand Canyon Retreat on Sunday and this pic was sent to me by a client. It speaks for itself; making hot water for the group with my jetboil, red heels, and my book, overlooking one of the most epic points on the trail.
Life is grand when you stop underestimating yourself.
We question ourselves and our abilities.
Perhaps our saboteur or imposter syndrome sets in.
That’s common for many of us.
But here is the thing, my friend:
Face your internal doubts and fears because the person who otherwise achieves your desires is most likely facing their own saboteurs and imposter syndrome, too. The difference is in the courage to take the risk and own what has been yours all along.
The world needs you to step fully into being you.
And I know because I have been there too, that you have got this.
Use this tool, and please, reply below. Share how it helps you too.
I love hearing from you.

2 年This is really good, Sara. On a post it note next to my desk is now written... "How will I feel when I see someone else celebrating what could have been mine?" It has to be someone, why not me?!?!? Congrats on everything you have and are currently stepping into. Thanks for sharing it on LinkedIn and providing us with a front row seat.
