Q 》Who has been the biggest influence in your life and how did they influence you?

My father, Allan, and my grandma, Joan, because they are the ones who made me who I am today!

They were absolutely amazing and are the most loving and caring people that I’ve experienced in my life. They have been my biggest support for everything and have been there for me no matter what. They sacrificed everything for me to help me be the best I can be. My father taught me that it wasn’t about where you came from, your geography, gender, social standing, wealth or race that really matters.

You see, I grew up with my Father, Grandfather, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Uncle and Aunt in a 2 bedroom house in a council estate in Cape Town, South Africa. My father, hustled two jobs and started companies as often as he could to get us out of the house, to get me into a better school and provide me with more opportunities.

My grandma was the biggest fighter I have ever met, through life, loss and cancer. She had been through so much, but she kept fighting everyday of her life which taught me to always be a fighter for what I believed in!!

These two people influenced my life in so many positive ways and I am so blessed to have had them in my life! They taught me it is not about where you came from but where you wanted to go, not what you were born with but what you can learn and apply.

Q 》When facing obstacles and tough times how do you continue to push through?

I have learned that great people are just ordinary people with an extraordinary amount of determination.

Looking back at my family members who struggled, I realize that they did not have the level of support and education about depression and alcoholism that I was fortunate to have and teach myself.

At two points in my life, I had problems controlling my anger and depression, just like my father. But I gained support through self-education and friends, and I learned to deal with it effectively.

Without these support systems, statistical research says that I would most likely have failed. I face obstacles every, single, day. With my dyslexia, multiple sclerosisand brain damage however I believe the best ways to overcome obstacles is with the right environment, parents peers and community all play a vital role.

I keep this poem in my phone and when the times are super tough, I read it aloud.

“When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must but don’t you quit.”
“Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver lining of the seeds of doubt,
And you can never tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So, stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit,
It’s when things go wrong that you must not quit.”

Q 》What are your Success habits & daily routines that help you achieve your goals.

I follow a strict 5 day a week 16 hour IF (intermittent fasting) schedule of food and technology, when I complete my last meal, I also complete my last email and check my phone and social for the last time before starting my “fast”. . Like most busy CEO’s.

I am most successful when I stay laser focused on my goals, and make sure to move one step closer each and every day. I firmly believe that if you are not addressing your company’s biggest challenges head on. You cannot thrive.

At the beginning of each day, I make a list of the top ten issues I need to address to reach our goals. Every morning, I block out time to focus on and tackle one of those issues. I listen to Tom Bilyeu ( Impact theory) inspiring stories and motivations while I work in the early mornings which helps me keep my mind from wandering and be productive. This allows me to accomplish a lot of my agenda before the rest of the day’s meetings and while my mind is fresh.

I work to quickly troubleshoot and delegate so I can pull myself back to my list of goals to get me where I want to go. Then I break my fast with a cup of coffee and go through all major social media platforms. It’s important for me to stay up to date with the industries I am involved with and seek inspiration before I tackle my day.

Being on top of everything that has to do with my business helps ‘my companies’ stay relevant and creative. I then meditate for 5 minutes and think-a-tate for 15 minutes about what is going on with my health, family, business and life then workout for 12 min with calisthetics and dress, I dress based on what impression I want to make or leave, before taking on the day.

Q 》If you could have dinner with 3 people alive or dead who would it be and why?

Giacomo Casanova. While he is best known as a lecher, he was also a Bachelor of Canonic Law, a famous mathmatician, duelist, escaped from an escape proof prison, spoke several languages, wrote best selling books, was a spy for the French, was a gambler, professional guest, created the French National lottery, and met nearly everyone important in the mid eighteenth century. An amazing raconteur, the conversation would be brilliant.

My Grandmother, I would give anything for just one more moment with her! X

Felix Dennis was best known as the British owner of magazine titles including ComputerShopperPCWorldMaximand The Week. Felix Dennis is right up there with the best of them and his words, stories, advice, warnings and inspiration changed my life and continues to do so, to this day. He had interests on both sides of the Atlantic, he had a fortune estimated at $1 billion.

Felix Dennis’s last wish was that the majority of his millions go to the forest he had spent the past decade planting.

Q 》When was your greatest public speaking moment?

In the last three years, I have became an in-demand speaker, one of the most sought after talks I give is what this story is based on, “Social media MBA through EMINEM” for the MBA students, deans, lecturers and members of The Association of MBA’s and as always I wanted it to be perfect. However, having promised to never do the same speech in the same way twice, I was quite nervous.

My wife helped me rehearse multiple times beginning a couple of weeks before, until I felt insanely prepared. But I still decided to take notes on index cards to have with me as a reminder tool, just in case I forgot anything, although I had never done this before.

The day arrived. My wife kindly took the day off from her job to accompany me, knowing I was still very anxious following a completely sleepless night. I remember my heart pounding so hard that she said she could actually see my shirt and waistcoat moving!

When I was introduced, I grabbed my cards, began walking up to the stage . . . and clumsily tripped and my cards went flying everywhere, even my hat fell off. There was some nervous laughter in the audience as I gathered my cards and to my horror, I realized I had failed to number them! *Rookie error, and the reason I have never used cards again!*

I took my place at the podium, steeled my nerves and began with, “The film 8 mile and what we can learn from it that teaches us all we need to know to run a successful social media strategy’: Eminem is like the great bard, and his first lesson would be to me – Dont forget to number your damn notecards!” Everyone relaxed and we all laughed together.

I then threw the cards on the floor and began my presentation with “Who am I? : I am 10% luck, 20% skill, 15% pure concentrated power of will, 5% pleasure, 40% not needing notecards, 10% pain and now you have 100% reason to remember my name!” the audience applaud.

Thankfully, I had rehearsed enough and thoroughly knew what I was talking about to give a really wonderful presentation. I used dropping the notecards by explaining that “ even experts and seasoned speakers get nervous doing something new, so be prepared to feel the same with social media.” And the final lesson was to inject humor into everything you do and your audience will remember you!

I received a standing ovation and several students told me they thought I had planned the notecard drop, like a Mic drop, was a brilliant and memorable way to begin. I have employed different card tricks since, but now always on purpose! When I have coached clients who are nervous about public speaking, I share this story and one of them actually did this to put his audience…and herself… at ease!

Q 》What’s your definition of Success?

“To me, the definition of success is waking up in the morning with a smile on my face, feeling each part of me, making sure it all still works and then knowing it’s going to be OK, whatever the day throws at me. Life is just a combination of days. Waking up happy feels like I am successful even when I was poor, living seven guys in a two-bedroom, sleeping head to toe with my great grandmother.

My definition of success is being happy, and doing things that makes you happy is the definition of success.”

His poetry is both in prose and in business.

How to Get Rich: One of the World’s Greatest Entrepreneurs Shares His Secrets

Book by Felix Dennis

Q 》Who do you consider to be the Most Mogul entrepreneur… and for what reason?

Tough Question, the best would be Sarah Breedlove (aka Madam CJ Walker) was one amazing lady. She is regarded as the first black female self-made American millionaire.

Born in 1867, her parents and older siblings had been slaves on a Louisiana plantation. She was the first of her family to be born into freedom (that’s some lucky timing!).

Madam CJ Walker started her own line of beauty and hair products specifically designed for black women. She saw a market that wasn’t being met, and created a solution to a problem no one else seemed interested in solving.

As you can imagine, during her time she had to fight tooth and nail for every step up the ladder. A smart, strategic, and enterprising woman, she perfectly embodies the entrepreneurial spirit (with stylish hair to match). however my favorite will always be P.T. Barnum. My family have always loved a good grafter, confidence man and Phineas Taylor Barnum took the art to new heights.

He played on our fascination with the bizarre and freakish with sideshow acts ranging from the midget Tom Thumb to Jumbo the giant elephant. In between was a host of more dubious curiosities. He created the Barnum and Bailey Circus as a showcase for all this wonderment, and dubbed it “the Greatest Show on Earth.” Along the way he invented modern advertising and became rich.

For the record, he never said “There’s a sucker born every five minutes,” but he left behind plenty of other bon mots. Among them: “Every crowd has a silver lining.”
