My recent research project onto SME marketing found that:
- Most SMEs don't have a clear, different and remarkable customer proposition
- Most SME marketing fails to deliver the desired results
- Few SMEs do the marketing basics brilliantly
For example, I studied the finalists in the 2018 UK Small Business Awards and found that only 30% of them send out a monthly email newsletter.
That's odd, when you realise that it's the easiest, least costly and most effective way of maintaining awareness.
According to the Small Business Association, to be a stable business, you need to spend around 10% of annual revenues on marketing, to replace lost business and clients. Those wishing to grow should spend more.
The most successful businesses spend around 10% of that deciding how best how to use it.
It seems that less than 10% do either.
