"I don't have the resources to achieve my goals".
"Show me the money!" – Jerry Maguire (1996)
How many of you equate success with abundant resources (aka money)? It's easy to believe that we need a hefty bank balance to pursue a life of fulfillment and purpose. The primary challenge with the lie of "needing more resources" is that it places our power outside of ourselves.
It makes us believe that our dreams are always just out of reach.
We are perpetually held hostage by the next thing we need but don't have.
This mindset not only stalls our progress but can also lead to feelings of inadequacy and frustration.
Reframe: “It's not a lack of resources, it's a lack of resourcefulness that stops you.”
The truth is, while having more resources like money, time, or connections can indeed be helpful, not having enough of it isn't the insurmountable barrier we make it out to be.
The real game-changer is resourcefulness.
"Resourcefulness is not a means of coping with deprivation; it can be a virtue that opens the door to greater achievement." – Marilyn vos Savant
Embracing resourcefulness opens up a world of opportunities. It encourages innovation, as we're pushed to think creatively and use what we have in new and unexpected ways. It fosters resilience, as we learn to navigate obstacles and setbacks without giving up. Most importantly, it empowers us, placing control back in our hands and reminding us that we are the architects of our destiny.
Embracing Resourcefulness: Strategies for Success
1.????? Start Small: Begin with what you have, where you are. Small steps can lead to big changes.
·???????? What’s Nearby? ?
Get intentional and creative about the resources, skills, and opportunities currently at your disposal, as a solid foundation from which to start, no matter how modest it may seem. Take stock of what you already have that can help - this could be as tangible as financial savings or as intangible as a skill set or a supportive network of friends, family, and professional contacts can be a rich source of support, advice, and opportunities.
·???????? Set Micro-Goals
Start where you are and break down your larger goal into smaller micro-goals that can be achievable with current resources and a shorter timeframe to build your momentum and confidence. Begin with where you are and what you have right now.
·???????? Utilize Free or Low-Cost Resources
Ask Google. There are countless free or low-cost resources available which can be invaluable for someone starting small.
?
2.????? Be Open to Feedback: Sometimes, the resource you need is a fresh perspective.
·???????? Cultivate a Growth Mindset
View feedback not as criticism but as an opportunity for learning and development, see every piece of feedback as a steppingstone towards improvement, regardless of whether it's positive or negative. Being open to feedback requires vulnerability. It's about admitting that there are things you don't know or areas where you can improve. Embracing this vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness, as it opens the door to profound personal and professional development.

·???????? Seek Out Diverse Perspectives
If all your friends and colleagues look and act like you, chances are you’re in an echo chamber. There are many leaders who only want "Yes" people around them, and when the diverse perspectives get quiet or worse, leave, you know it's time for something different. Get feedback from a wide range of sources, diverse perspectives can provide a more comprehensive understanding of your strengths and areas for improvement, offering insights you might not have considered.
·???????? Use Feedback to Set New Goals
Feedback can be a powerful tool for setting new personal or professional goals. Use the insights gained from feedback to identify new areas for learning, development, or change. This ensures that feedback directly contributes to your ongoing growth journey.
3.????? Network: Build relationships. Often, the resources we need are hidden within our network.
·???????? Start with Your Immediate Circle
Often, we overlook the wealth of resources, knowledge, and opportunities that our current connections can offer. Share your goals and interests, and ask about theirs. This mutual exchange can reveal unexpected ways to support each other.
·???????? Offer Value First
Focus on how you can offer value (sharing knowledge, providing support, or connecting them with someone else) to the other person without expecting anything in return immediately. By offering value first, you lay the foundation for a relationship based on mutual respect and generosity.
·???????? Be Authentic
Be yourself – everyone else is taken. Align with people who have your values and goals and be intentional about sharing resources, advice, and opportunities – so it’s reciprocated.?Networking, when approached with intentionality and generosity, can significantly propel you toward achieving your goals and enriching your personal and professional life.
"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." – Roosevelt
Yes, fear of failure, self-doubt, procrastination, negative influences, and a lack of planning can also impede your progress. But, your greatest asset can be your ability to be resourceful. Holding fast to the belief that money will somehow catapult you into achieving your dreams is a lie that we can gently lay to rest.
?When we shift our focus from what we lack to what we can create with what we already have – we get to see beyond the limitations of our circumstances and tap into our innate resourcefulness.
After all, the only real thing holding us back is the belief that something is holding us back.
Onward,
